I'm having the same issue, however it is with the ABS light on.

When I hit bumps in the road with the driverside front wheel the light comes on and the speedo dies.

I removed the sensor on the driverside and cleaned it up.

Now its even more sensitive then before.

I noticed a little cut on the ground wire on the harness.

It is so close to the end of the wire, I don't know if I can save it.

I have a similar issue..... when the SC got installed, I had to have the fuse box replaced. Separate issue. Anyways, half way home from the install the odometer went out and the Air Bag went on. Same thoughts: car won't depreciate... but i need to get it fixed. I though maybe there was something with the fusebox and something not getting connected correctly - not a huge electrical guru here....



Flash, why did you ask if the speedo was part of the symptoms? My speedo works fine. Does that give a different diagnosis? Thanks, man.

speedo gets its signal from the wheel area, just like the abs.



odometer alone is usually just the gear in the guage

my problem was bumping on the road speedo down and ABS on. It was the relay in the fusebox that was worn out after 20 years of service......... I checked everything with the osciloscoop etc. The speedo goes up and the light goes out when the relay makes contact after another bump.....



Lots of fun. Try another relay or just bridge the connectors.

The outer jacket for the ground wire is melted away and the copper is exposed. I have a strong feeling that it's the harness and not the relay or sensor.

Normally I'd just cut it and re-wire it but the "cut" is very close to the plastic part of the abs harness.

When the sun goes down a little I'll take the wheel off and take a pic.

Here is the damaged harness.

I re-made the ground connector. (in blue)

The jacket damage seems superficial so I ruled it out as being the problem.



I took unknown4u's advice and swapped relays with a 964.

Problem solved!

I ended up sending my Speedo to North Hollywood Speedo and they fixed it. I have re-installed the speedo (along with new chrome dials since i had the cluster out). It now works as advertised. I would like to thank everyone on the is forum, especially flash and daryl for all the help.

I fixed my speedometer & odometer not working and anti-lock warning warning light by replacing the ABS relay in the fusebox. First, I did a bench test by jumping the the battery to high voltage terminals to listen for the click (31 & 15), mine did click, but no continuity thru 30 & 87, meaning not working. Funny thing, after the test and few clicks, put it back on and it worked for a few ignition cycles, then not working. New one is fine!

My odometer quit on my '94 968 cab just recently, but speedometer still working normally. I understand that most likely this is a problem of the gear wheel inside the speedometer housing. I have never removed the instrument cluster from a 968 (or any other car, for that matter). Is it pretty simple? Any tricks or special problems involved?

Resurrecting this old post again, so a while back i mentioned that the "!" and Abs warning light comes on intermittently on my car while driving and sometimes when stationary. The problem is now manifesting further with the speedometer dropping to zero (not always but has happened a few times now) when the lights come on. From the above post, it appears this could be an issue with the abs relay or abs/wheel sensor? Is that right?


Wanted to isolate the possible causes before i order in replacement parts.

Hi Guys,

 

Noticed my odometer is not working. I pulled cluster out and checked all the gears and everything looks good.

I had another cluster and tried it and odometer worked for about a mile and then quit.

Put original cluster back in and odometer is not working at all.

 

I have no lights on at all and everything works as it should including the speedometer.

 

What actually tells the odometer to turn? Is the sensor located at the front wheels or the sensor on top of the flywheel area?

Not so. The Tip does have a sensor on it leading to the transmission control module but not the speedometer. As noted in other posts, the speedo is run off the drivers side ABS sensor.

 

I changed all the front and rear wheel bearings, rotors, CV joints and pads two weeks ago and developed a speedo concern. Sometimes it would work, sometimes it was erratic, sometimes is was dead. The conditions developed after going over highway lane divider bumps. When I removed the rotor to inspect the ABS sensor it looked a little dirty but seemed to have the proper air gap. I did notice some wheel bearing grease in the reluctor so I used a can of electrical contact cleaner to wash all the dirt and grease away. Then checked the sensor ground on the strut and the sensor terminal connector. Put it all back together and all was well again. Typically I thought if it was a sensor, I would also have an ABS fault but it turns out that isn't correct either.
