Ok, a few days ago my ABS light came on, no big deal, I will get the shop to look at it and clear it. ahh, but the next day the speedometer stopped working and by extension the odometer. Now the up side is that my car will no longer depreciate! but the down side is that my ABS doesn't work and I don't know how fast I am going which also means the cruise control doesn't work any more either.

Took it to a shop nearby (not a Porsche specific shop) and they plug it into the diagnostics test set and couldn't get any fault codes for it. They looked at the speed sensors and they all looked fine, they said that it was most likely the speed sensor in the transmission (didn't realize there was one), but the place they order their parts from didn't have one in stock. They didn't want to order it from the dealer, because the local dealer wont let them return the part if it doesn't fix the problem. Fortunately since they didn't have a solution they could do anything about, they did not charge me for the diagnostics.

So first question, anyone have any thought on the potential problem and best way to test it? I am not a wrench, but I don't mind giving fixing it a try if I have good directions.

Secondly, anyone know of a really good P-car shop in the Alexandria Va area?

Thanks

Dave
almost positive there is no speed sensor in trans. that's a 951 thing

likely a connection at the sensor at the wheel, or just a crap load of brake dust on it. happens from time to time.
Interesting, by front wheels do have a crap load of brake dust on them. The brake pads were replaced right before I drove the car from TX to VA. The front left one was f'n loud too at really low speed until after the first good rain. So do you think remove the wheels and hose down the inside and outside of the hubs with brake cleaner?
good start
if the speedo stops, checks the relay in the fusebox. the abs light goes on and the speedo stops when there is no + 12 volt!. I had the same problem. I figured it out the relay had gone bad. So check at the abs unit if there is 12 volt. The sensors you can check with an ossiloscope at the abs computer. If you check it there you have checked the wires as well.
Trans speedo is 951, 944 and 944 S2 thing.
OK, I have not had a chance to check these yet, but I need to clarify a mistake that I made in my original post. It is not the ABS light, it is the Air Bag light. I don't know how much this changes the recommendations. I wont be able to get to it until at least Wednesday.

I really appreciate everyone's help.
totally different animal.

is it still on?

is the speedo AND the odometer out. or just the odometer?
yes, the air bag light is still on and both the speedo and the odometer do not work.
have you been behind the instrument cluster lately? it sounds like the center connector is not making full contact
I have not, I have never removed the instrument cluster.

What else would you expect to not work correctly if the center connector was not making contact?

Right now the Airbag and the speedo/odo are the only things not working.

For the next few weeks, the car is my daily driver, so the removal and replacement of the cluster will have to wait until at least the first weekend of june.
Doesn't a wonky ground cause intermittent instruments and warning lights?
That is what I would think
Ok, finally got time to pull the instrument cluster. Not as hard as I thought, but those screws in the vent are horribly positioned.

So, didnt find anything wrong with the cluster, so I pulled the speedo out. Underneath the little circuit board, I found a small resister that was burnt to a crisp. I would post a picture, but I haven't reached member level yet, couple more posts.

So, where can I send my speedo to get it fixed, I really don't want to pay $850 for a new one.

Thanks
