9th Annual Paso Robles Wine Tour/Fun Run
#41

this is definitely taking a turn into something not intended or desired.

it is indeed about the people and the wine. but this isn't about other porsches. it's about the 968. in many of our minds there are no other porsches. many of us look at owners of other porsches as people who might one day graduate up to a 968. on that basis, we love to show off our cars and perhaps swing them over.

but this really is not the kind of event to do that.

first, this is a perk that i produce for the benefit of 968forums members. we have never had any non 968 forums members attend. it's my way of thanking the members for their support. a lot of work goes into organizing this, and i don't think that it is unfair at all to have a say in whom i invite. this is a private event and by invitation only. can i bring unannounced a bunch of my rowdy musician friends over to your house for your party?

second, the group needs to be a manageable size. when we had it open to whomever dropped in, it got too large to be able for the wineries to handle. most of them have a hard enough time handling 6 cars at once. that is one of the reasons that the event changed a few years ago to what it is now.

third, it is about the 968. that is the common thread for all of us. it is the heart of why we all get together. to open it up to other cars detracts from what brought us all together on this website in the first place. we have little enough opportunity for us to gather without being sneered at by snobby 911 owners. this is the one event that we all look forward to each year. people cross the country to attend this, and i think it is for the reason that it is a 968 event, and not just another generic porsche event.

again, the people are welcome. i am not even dead set against the cars. but i'm not sure how to deal with the repercussions of the dilution. it just sets a precedent that i don't think most of us want. i am certainly willing to listen to the masses though, and respond accordingly. i would expect that any such attendees would follow the same requirements as everyone else, become a member of 968 forums, and buy a ticket.

I think that the issue is that this is a 968 club event for club members and their guests. I was busting chops as an east coast member who plans on attending and listened to last years story about yellow vettes. Obviously I will need to rent a vehicle. If your a club member and own a 968 that's working why wouldn't one want to drive their 968 at a 968 club event? Certainly doesn't seem unreasonable.

thinking about a more circuitous route, with maybe some zig-zags along the way to see some friends.

back to the main topic

it looks like we have some interesting wineries in mind for this year. i always try to shake it up and change it each year, and this one will be no different.

i am definitely going to improve on the fun run course. that was a bit nerve wracking last year

if all goes well, i won't be wrenching on the car the day before the event either

I'd love to make it out for this event one of these years; it sounds like a blast. I'll keep my stock springs, and maybe spring for a set of 16" wheels and tires to help dampen the effect of my solid caster blocks, and drive on over, maybe in 2013. Do you give awards to be person who drives from farthest away, in a 968?

If I was not off to Brazil in two weeks, I would seriosly consider driving down from BC. The wife has mentioned that she would be up to a cruise down to CA someday. Maybe next year...

Tickets are purchased and other arrangements are being worked on. Looking forward to sunny climes. Couple inches of snow on Thursday has left the road in front of the garage a snowy, iced mushy mess. After spending the last week detailing the car, not done yet, it's just sitting.

I'm trying to rearrange some things so I can make it again this year. One question for Flash - should I wait until after the Sunday fun run to install my splitter? <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

Re hotel, I left a voice message for John Arnold ( @ Holiday Inn Express ) last Friday , have not received a call back yet.. I'll just call the reservations desk today, I hope he clued-in the staff about the group rate, etc..

Also, I 'll send you the money today, before I forget again..

When I spoke to Erni ( Ernest ) about two or three weeks ago, he indicated he's planning on it so you can probably add him to the NorCal headcount.. Also, not sure when exactly Sean is coming back from Argentina, I'll see if it's in time for Paso but doubtful. He did say the white 968 is still "alive and well" so it'd be nice to see it in the convoy once again. And I presume he'd get the distance award, LOL

SoCal slacker #1 here. I'm bummed about missing this, Flash. I'm just dumping too much cash into the car this week (corner balance, alignment and, finally, new clutch) - and then moving to a new place later this month - so my budget for fun stuff is pretty much gone - and then some - for now!
