650 hp stock, the new norm ?
#1

Viper's new model comes with ( stock ) 640 hp , 600 ft/lbs . One of the new Mustang GT500 options will also have 650 HP, Ferrari is planning a 900 HP street car to surpass the Veyron's speed, and I have a feeling with the release of the Viper, and the uber-mustang, Corvette folks are at the drawing board as we speak working on their own super car.

Too funny here we are , trying to squeeze on other 20 or 25 or even 80 more hp out of our 968s...but that's ok, I'd rather drive a 968 than any of the aforementioned cars ( except the Ferrari...that one, or most of them anyway, I'd gladly drive ! )

There are a lot of 500HP cars that are totally liveable as a daily driver these days. Fun, and if I had the disposable income I'd probably drive one daily. However for me 300-350HP works in a 3000-4000 pound car and I would be hard pressed to pay a lot (or tolerate a lot) for much more. I have not driven one of these 650HP beasts so I cannot comment on them. The HP levels of other more commonplace cars is getting pretty high as well, look at the hairdresser Mustangs these days. Pretty fast.

My goal for a 968 cabrio style car would be a meaty, reliable 350HP and so that is why I think about the V8 swaps a lot. The HP can be reached with a supercharger but the blower whine is a distraction (and drives nearby boy-racers slightly mad) so it's not the best solution for me. At any rate a torquey 325 FWHP in a 968 would be fine with me and more would be fun but at what cost?

i just had this conversation. the SL550 has 389, and i have not been able to use it all. i have gotten close for a slit second or two, but that's about it.

i am currently doing a build on my motor, and even with the supercharger, i am still only targeting to have the same 325 i felt the car needed. i have always stood by a 10:1 lb/hp ratio as optimal. fortunately i don't have to deal with supercharger whined with the rotrex. that would make me nuts, and was a concern when i first started, but it's pretty darned quiet (at least until about 6200 where the air is rushing past the venturi).

as a side note, with the additional components i am designing right now for my SC kit that is on the other cars, it should hit around 280 at the wheels. do the math from there

Yeah, for a normal street car that weighs under 4000 pounds, anything much above 300 hp seems kind of silly, imho. For a sporty car like the 968, I agree that a 10:1 lb/hp ratio is about optimal.

Thanks for sharing that video Bandit! The thing is, they will continue to build more HP into production cars until insurance companies do like they did in the 70s and either refuse to insure them or charge excessive premiums for them. The worst part in my opinion is that unskilled drivers are buying these cars and they are becoming lethal weapons.

But here's the good news. As much as it irks me that I can't accelerate as fast as many sedans these days, I am happy with my 968 for what it is. As evidenced in my posts elsewhere, I just had owners of two fire-breathing 500+ HP pony cars come over and drool over my 968 along mustanghusker's. And they weren't the only ones to come over. Shelby's and the like are great but they are everywhere. To the untrained eye, they are just another Mustang variant. Ho Hum. The 968 is like one of my favorite cars, the XKE....it's art on wheels and people really enjoy seeing it. All ages, all genders (maybe even a transgender or two) and all automotive backgrounds.

That being said, if anyone wants to give me a new Viper, I'm not going to turn them down. But, I'm not giving up the 968.

Off the soap box.

Yes, the balance of the 968 really makes it special. I think dropping a 500 hp engine in one would in a way ruin it.

Oh hell no it wouldn't , lol.. except if it was heavier than our stock one and mess up the 50/50 weight distribution :-)

You have to wonder - a motorbike has something like 2:1 lbs/hp ratio - so cars have some way to go to match this. But 650hp being driven through two wheels has to just amount to lots of smoke. But sometimes living the Top Gear life would be fun, if anti-social. With the laws over here for "anti-hooning" where you get your car confiscated for 28 days and lose your licence for spinning the wheels or doing more than 30km/h over the speed limit - the fun police have definately lost their sense of humour.

So unless you take a car with this much HP to a track - where can you use it.

I have always wanted a car that would light up the rear wheels under power - haven't found one yet - maybe these monsters might do it and scare me anough to then not want one.

I think he would have been better off with quiet mufflers. I do like the wheelspin he develops late in 2nd gear. If you listen carefully you can hear it.

I'm also on the side of the 10:1 ratio. My Probe GT/Mazda is right around that value with a really flat torque curve. Redline is 7500, and max. HP is at 6800; makes it a blast to drive; still pulling hard when you're ready to shift.

Ultimately I'd like to have that on my 968

just read an article my friend sent me ; there are more than 60 different makes and models of "street" cars currently being sold in the US with 500 hp or more in stock trim, and quite a few at 700 to 750 hp , with one ( Veyron of course ) at 1000 hp . the largest number by any given maker belongs to MBZ ( primarily AMG models ), and granted, they do not list any of those 60 + cars power to weight ratio, just the pure hp numbers but still..
