presuming this was the dodge daytona ? 650 hp in modern cars though is far from 650 hp in ( ahem ) ancient technology vehicles , the level of drive and stability control embedded in the new cars is remarkable now, enabling most people with far less skill to manage ok, but having said that anything more than 500 hp in any car is a handful for the average Joe. 1400 hp is pure insanity even in the hands of accomplished race drivers .

I drove a 1,000 HP 2004 Corvette (Supercharged crate motor 427). Wheel hop was insane and even tubbed the only way way it was ever going to be controllable was if they went to AWD. My friend had it de-tuned to 760 HP (not that it's insignificant, but fewer things break).

His current project is a 1970 (1968 and 1971) restomod GTO convertible with crate motor (LS7). Since it's a beach crawlers he only going to tune it to 590 HP or so...

And here we go again, as soon as a supercar is released to the public it takes less than a week for some bozo to crash it : https://autos.yahoo.com/news/mclaren-p1-...45284.html

Only the second day of ownership and this 27 year old dips*** in Texas manages to total a $ 1 million McLaren P1 !!

so, i am quickly coming around to the thinking that 600hp may be just fine. the X5 we have posts 445hp on the bmw site. however, based on real tests, it looks like it has more like 500. there will be a kit coming out very shortly, that is programming only, that will push it up over 600, be safe to run, and CARB certified. not sure there won't be a factory software upgrade. the new M series X5 already does that. the thing already has posted 0-60 times in the low 4s (car and driver did 4.2). i am just imagining what it would be like with over 600hp. in an SUV???

just crazy. or is it?

600 hp, or the new 700 hp hellcat or even the 1,000 + hp in various supercars is " just fine " as long as it's in the hands of those who recognize what that power can do and have the training to manage it properly . That training should be mandatory and enforced by the DMV so as to allow licenses only to those proven capable of handling a car like that. You need a special license to drive a truck, why not one to get behind the wheel of a missle ?!

Perhaps we could require specialized training for anyone who wishes to drive over 100. Yearly renewals required. Great revenue raiser!

I vote for training requiremens for anyone who wants to drive UNDER 100 ...so they know how to pull over in time and get the hell out of my way , lol.

and then on Saturday THIS guy in California decided he can't possibly let the Texan in the P1 crash take all the publicity.. http://www.cnn.com/2014/11/30/us/califor...index.html

but have no fear, the next crash is just around the corner : rapper Lil Wayne bought his 16 year old daughter a new Ferrari GTO ( 599xx) for her sweet sixteen birthday, this last weekend. And a BMW x5 SUV with a specially customized high performance engine . Great, a 16 year old princess behind the wheel of a rocket on wheels and a big-ass car that's also all suped up. Ah, some parents are so responsible , aren't they ?!

2015 Corvette Z 06. Go test drive one ! I'm going to do that sometime later this month ( no plans to buy one though, regardless of how much better it looks than in past years, or how impressive it may be ..it's still a Corvette, lol ). One of our divisions' general managers , who owns a 911 turbo and a Nissan GTR , test drove the Vette and he's trading in the GTR for it this weekend. He described driving the car as the most exhilarating experience with a sensation that neither his Porsche nor Nissan can even come remotely close to.. He said that while he recognizes the actual stats among the cars are not a night and day difference, the seat of the pants made it feel as if the Vette can tow both the Porsche and the GTR together, and still walk away from either one of those, so clearly a compelling fun factor, even if it may only be a fraction of a second faster here and there by comparison to his other cars.

Boats and planes of different weights and propulsion require different ratings of operaror's licenses. Cars should be no different. They should have different classes of licenses for power ratings. Up to say, 300 hp is one license. From 301-700 another, 701-1000, then1000+ hp rating.

I like that idea. Maybe they can work something out with the power to weight ratio? A 200 hp BMW S1000RR would not be comparable to, let's say, a 400 hp car.
