650 hp stock, the new norm ?
#81
I like that idea. Maybe they can work something out withe the power to weight ratio? A 200 hp BMW S1000RR would not be comparable to, let's say, a 400 hp car.
That would be interesting. A Bugatti Veyron would be in the same rating as a Caterham R620, they both have similar 0-60 times but very different top speeds. Some other criteria would have to be factored in to account for capable top speed and acceleration.

i would argue that allowing any car to travel more than 90mph should require a key code activation which would require a driver to have gone through school and qualify to drive that fast. forget about which car, how much power, or any of that. nobody has any legitimate business going over 90 on amy public road.

i would further argue that this idea could easily be applied to drivers who can't even drive that fast safely, and further restrict them. for example, my 91 year old father in law has no business driving over 60mph. same goes for most camry and prius drivers.

but, if you qualify, and so does the car (which would require frequent safety checks) then i think you should be allowed to drive as fast as you want, as long as it's safe

by the way, this would all be very easy to do in today's cars.

Ha! Camry and Prius drivers! Best I can tell, they watch their MPG readouts and think it's the speedometer! Another idea would be to restrict them to the right lane where their concern for mileage will not impede the rest of the world. While I respect their decision to own a green car, they should acknowledge that (at least) getting close to the speed limit is also a valid goal.

With that said, last week I was cruising the 395 south of Reno at about 70. Light traffic and perfect conditions. A high school age male went past me in a lowered Prius with custom wheels at about 90. It made me smile a little.

lol - and getting 17mpg doing it too. seriously, i am so sick and tired of finding a prius in front of me in the HOV lane going slower than the fast lane. the whole point of the HOV lane is to go faster than the rest of the traffic. if you aren't willing to do that GET THE HELL OUT!!!!

And IT'S A RECORD folks ! Owner wrecks ( total loss ) a new Hellcat in just ONE HOUR after buying it. The article mentioned that the car's 707 hp is only 40 hp less than a NASCAR Sprint Cup race car. Kinda' surprising it took this dufus a whole hour before he managed to total his car.

I respect people's decision to drive whatever they choose. I'm sick of smug Prius drivers thinking that they own a green car. Cars are not green by any stretch! It's ridiculous. Drive a Prius because you want to drive a Prius but don't judge others for their choice of vehicle.

A couple years ago I was driving my buddy's Hummer (he had it supercharged, strangely fun to drive for a few days). You would not believe the scowls that I received. I even had a lady flip me off! I pulled into Whole Foods, and a guy jumped in front of me and started yelling at me. He quickly calmed down when I stopped the rig and stepped out (I'm 6'3", 220 lbs). Anyhow, he argued that his diesel Mercedes was so much more responsible than the Hummer (coincidentally my car at the time was a diesel Mercedes). To be clear, I am actually not a fan of the Hummer. I just think it's ugly but It just irks me to no end when folks think they are being green while driving any vehicle. Walk or ride your bicycle, then you are being MORE green but even then, don't judge. Life takes resources. The damage is done. The green movement is so negligible as to be arguably a complete waste of time. I know this is probably an argument for another thread but this struck a cord with me.

The article aside, I would be remised if I did not note that I agree with Ryker on the above post. ( although, yes I'm sure it probably fits better on another thread, just no idea which one.. ) Smug, holier than thou people can just kiss my ass. And I'll go out of my way to annoy the hell out of them ad infinitum if they cross my path with that attitude, whether in words or by their action. Hummers are ugly but great for one reason : they can turn those piddly green cars into " road kill " . :-)

The Tesla S ( model 85 D ) puts down a whopping 864 ft-lbs of torque !! Delivered immediately. And with the car's amazing launch control technology , even the proverbial little old lady from Pasadena can supposedly reach 60 mph in about 2.9 seconds ( That's the brand new model tested time, last year's model was a snail barely making that in 3.2 sec , lol ) I've been watching videos of this car easily walking away from $ 500,000 + supercars as if they were standing still. Of course, by the end of a q-mile most of them do catch up and then pull ahead but it takes a while and it must simply cause the Lambo and Ferrari and Vette and all those drivers a great deal of heartache, off the line anyway , if they try to take on one of those electric vehicles that sound like a sewing machine is racing you :-) :-)

I know of an ugly unreliable piece of crap that does that in 2,7 seconds. Real life, not 'ideal' conditions. And that was the older model.

Wow, hats off to that ugly duckling . Nothing short of amazing . Ok, I must concede a little bit, the newer models ( starting around 2013 ) are not so ugly anymore - even the latest design changes on the Boxster make it almost an attractive car. No doubt they're also more reliable nowadays but so are Jaguars and even ( gulp , ) Ferraris . However, pray that nothing breaks down after you're out of warranty, because the cost of R&R-ing any little thing will probably shock you. Just about everything is integrated, can't simply replace a lightbulb, the entire $ 2,000 or whatnot assembly must be changed, the computer reprogrammed only by the dealer, rear bumper removed probably, lol, yada yada ..you get the picture..

I still can't help but laugh every time I see an early Boxster ; tough to figure out which end of the car you're looking at ... hey, it's headed this way...no wait, that's the rear, it's leaving...no wait, it's.....WTF ? LOL

Ford Mustang fans everywhere rejoice ! The new Saleen Mustang 302 has 730 HP and 600 ft-lbs torque. MSRP : $ 73 K. Wonder if that's intentional ; exactly $ 100 for each pony :-) Either way, that's a lot of muscle .

Yes. I stand corrected. :-) :-) Forgot that most of these super cars are in large part made up of exotic materials. I remember seeing a crashed Corvette ( sometime in the 70s, and I had never seen a damaged one before then ..) and looked at the cracked and " missing chunks" of the body in complete amazement and shock , as I had no clue at that time they were fiberglass and not metal ...
