Oil Drip top rear of cylinder head area?
#1

Hi All,

I have a 1992 Amazon Green Cab with around 60k miles.

I just did the RTV reseal on my lower balance shaft cover as that was starting to leak noticeably.

So far that is holding nicely until I can properly fix it while doing a more major service.

While looking up I also noticed a very tiny oil "drip" coming from the rear of the cylinder head (see link to photo).

It is not much, but seems to move down to the exhaust manifold cyl #4 and likely burns off there.

It is quite discolored and has probably been doing this for years and never making it to the ground.

Looking from the top I can't seem to find where it is coming from, other than the rear of the camshaft area - perhaps a bad seal in there?

I had a Porsche specialist do a major service (all belts, variocam pads, water pump, spark plug seals, valve cover gasket seal, etc.) about 2,000 miles ago and it seems quite strange that they wouldn't have addressed this relatively small drip. Or maybe it leaked in the past, they fixed it and it has started again - who knows.

I've noticed oil in the 4 areas circled in red. It isn't much at all but it is there after a long drive.

Any ideas for what is causing this in this area?

Thanks,

Mark

Sorry, didn't find the photo very useful. Can't tell, but the fastener (nut) on the right side of the photo looks to be either wet with oil or not fully tight.

Could there be oil getting on there and running around the exhaust flange? Problem is, if there is oil leaking on the fastener, you would normally see it collecting on the lowest point...which would be the bottom end of the fastener. That doesn't seem to be the case.

Could the exhaust be leaking there?

Thanks for taking a look!

I did check the manifold nuts and they are tight. The two circles to the left are where I've seen a drop of oil form, so it seems to be leaking higher up than the manifold and then dripping down and around it.

After looking some more, my guess is it is starting somewhere back around the cylinder head plug at the camshaft end.

You're probably right. Best wishes for figuring it out.

Starting with aircooled Porsches many years ago, a drop or two of oil, especially if it doesn't reach the ground...is something we didn't lose sleep over...Smile

Thanks!

I've had my Triumph Spitfire 1500 since 1985, so I've seen a drip or two LOL!
