Winter oil weight
#1

Hi all,

It seems as if winter is already here.

I'm currently running Mobil 1 20w50 and it works very well but am a little apprehensive to using this in the cold Canadian winters. Should I have concerns and switch to a lighter oil or just drive it as is?

TIA

that could make for some hard starts

consult the owner's manual on page 64 for a chart based on temps

basically if it gets below 10F, the 20-50 is too thick

if it gets below -10F you should be into a 5-30, otherwise a 10-30 or 10-40

I'm planning to pick up some oil at the Pep Boys on black Friday for my winter change-over.

Any thoughts on going with a 5W-50 synthetic over the winter in Pennsylvania?

In the summer I have been running 15W-50.

Last winter I ran 10W-30, and noticed the oil pressure gauge running really low when the engine was really hot (in the spring before changing back to the thicher weight). In fact the low pressure light flashed a few times at idle!

No problems with 15W-50, but cranking the engine in the cold is not good.

As I understand it, the number before the "W" is the cold temp viscosity, and the number after the "-" is the high temp viscosity.

Any reason not to run 5W-50 all year round?

Thanks for any advice,

Jamie
