Wing removal
#1

I need to remove the rear wing as it is ready to fall off. I am hoping that I can find out why it is loose and make some new re-attachment points as needed. It rattles so much that it is very annoying. Has anyone ever done this and then been able to make it tight again? It seems as though some "bolts/screws/fasteners" are missing, others are loose and some just don't seem to me to be able to be tightened.

It's pretty straight forward to remove. When I bought mine the wing drove me nuts as it would squeek when you hit any kind of bump while driving. Took it off and found the PO left ou 2 screw the held the front tips in place so it just rocked back and forth. A couple of counter sunk Roberson screws and a hacksaw fixed that. You just have to watch for 2 bolts on either side of the rear that hide in a cavity on the edge. You have to sneek your finger or a wrench in there to hold the nuts while loosening the screw.
The other caveat is the trim that goes up the side of the window. I made a screwdriver from a flat blade that fits the round nuts with the 2 grooves. I just ground out the centre so there were 2 mini flats and a hollow spot in the middle for the screw shaft. Watch out for the actual screws as they are glued on to the trim with a black cement. Mine had 3 that were broken as the PO probably tightened them too much and snapped the glue. I have tried to cement them once with Sikaflex but it didn't hold so next time off I will have to resort to a more rigid cement (epoxy?).

Thanks. That seems a rather good description. I will try this on the weekend.

So the wing is off and the fibreglass was actually broken away (before I owned the car) in one area. See pic.

The PO then drove a screw into an area beside it to hold it. Anyway, The wing is off and I am going to have the damage repaired. I am also going to try to find some thin foam to cover the attachment area on both sides to keep the rattling down a bit.

Lesson - don't use the wing to close the hatch.

I also noticed that as Dave and Xrad said two of the screws holding the side trim panel have pulled loose. Can't post a pic because this one used up almost all the space but will post a second one below. I may just try to buy the piece new if it is available and not too pricey and replace it. I also will likely buy all new fasteners all the way around to deal with rust.

I also noticed that the hatch wouldn't open and I had to climb in the back to pull on the manual wire. the part that attached to the shaft of the motor had broken. Anyone ever had to replace this?

You could epoxy the fastner back the side trim instead of buying a new one.
If you do, reinforce the others while you have it aprt.
Should hold up for another 10 years.

One thing I learned from Porsche on this forum is to close the hatch by pressing on the frame of the window right above the two lock mechanisms. Good luck with the fix!

then covered in black cloth (ie hockey) tape to hopefully cut down on the squeaks when it is installed.

Wing is done. Held on now with four bolts instead of two. No rattles, wiggles, or anything. First Saturday I have taken off from work in about 8 months and it was worth it.

Are these the right screws to remove? (the 2 phillips to the left of the wiper motor) When I try to back them out the screws they just spin in place as if they have no threads.

Looks like I'm going to have to remove the hatch window trim to access the bolts described above. Man am I glad this thread was here. Here I thought Id have this off and the new wing on in 20 minutes.

Any other tips are welcome.

Those screws cover the side parts of the wing that cover the glass attachment. I had to take them out at the bottom because the smaller "wing" that you push on to the close the trunk needs to come off to get the main wing off, and it slides under those side wings. The side wings are held on with a funny circular sort of slotted nut and you only need to take the ones off near the bottom. The main wing nuts (ha ha!) are four larger ones that clearly go through to the wing itself. Take them off and the wing comes right off. It is awkward and a bit heavier than you might think and will tilt if you don't hold it firmly. I would hate to see a pic of it through your back glass.

There are four parts - the main wing held on with four (or perhaps fewer) bolts, the centre smaller metal wing (there is a bit of wiring under there for the wiper motor) and the two side wings. They all come off very easily but the side wings only need to come off at the bottom if all you want to do is remove the main wing. If you want to remove the glass all parts need to be off.

If those screws are spinning it is because the threads on the female end have stripped or the nut has fallen off (can't remember which). I simply replaced them with a small bolt and nut with a washer.

After you remove the centre wing piece with the brake light in it there are 2 screws at either end that will appear to just spin. That is because there is a 10mm (me thinks) nut on the inside of the wing that you can just fit a box end on to hold fast while you back out the screw.
The nut will inevitably fall inside the wing or on the ground, as me how I know

Thanks guys. This really helps. Its dark out but I gotta get this thing off as I have prematurely listed the wing on ebay. Guess Ill go at it now. 9:00PM

Step one- remove lower wing to reveal screws. (Use a make shift tool as I dont have a fork shaped screw driver).
2. Back out screws to upper wing while holding the nut at the top.
3. undo the bottom half of the left and right window trim to reveal the front screws holding the wing (one screw per side).

Does that sound right?

Just for future note. I took a flat screwdriver bit and knotched out the centre to fit the split nuts on the sides. Was well worth the mod as I have used it many times repairing the glue joint that holds those screws to the frame.

Needle nose Vice grips work well also and will prevent loss of the item when it spins loose.

Had my car over at provost and they fixed my wing. It was pretty loose. Max did a phenomenal job, the thing is on really tight now, like the day it rolled off the factory floor (probably better). Highly recommend these guys if you need your 968 fixed, they know everything about these. Also had my starter replaced as well.
