who is running with leda coilovers

Hi guys,



Im at it again, I got my powersteering leak fixed finally, so now im looking to get in more mischief. After looking at the cost difference I am pretty set on the leda coilovers, how do you like them? are you running with the torison bar? should i leave mine in or go ahead and take it out, my car is a street car most of the time.

ledas are nice, but on a street car they seem a bit of overkill, and pretty pricey for something you probably won't use



have you driven a car with konis, aftermarket springs, and a coilover rear?

hey flash how ya doing, I been looking over it and the ledas are $2200 from rsbarn and the konis with the rear coilover and front inserts with progressive springs come out to $1769 from paragon, while both options are nice, the price is pretty close in comparison to the koni 28 series or the motons(yum)



Anyone out there have ledas on their daily driver?

I am running the Ledas on my soon-to-be-track-only car, and still have torsion bars per PCA stock class rules.



A lot of this comes down to personal preference as far as ride comfort, type of streets you typically drive on, etc. etc.



That said, for a street only car I would stay stock or somewhere similar.



If you are doing a lot of track days - then go for it. And welcome to the slippery slope!

My car was my daily driver and to be honest while the ride was relatively ok on the street, I absolutely hated it. The jarring was just too much.

Interesting, thanks for the info, I only have expeiernce with 2 other coilover suspensions, one is tein and the other is kw, I have been in an audi with these and the ride was nice but a little harsh(i wouldn't mind this on the 968), they are also adjustable and the price seems reasonable $2300 on the net

that's a good price on ledas - i see pretty stiff springs on there - does that price include the spacers?



not sure what konis you are looking at, but the entire setup should only be about 1500, springs and all - i'll go back and look and get the numbers again

Hi Mech--

While everyone has a different threshold of what is and is not tolerable, I think inevitably you either end up with a decent track car that's lousy on the street, or a decent street car that's lousy on the track. My solution is to have one of each, but if I was limited to just one, I'd have a decent street car.



The Ledas are really great pieces, but I think they are massive overkill for the street and even the occasioal track warrior. Rear coilovers also tend to make the 944/968 chassis way too stiff for my tastes.



If that cash is burning a hole in your pocket and you want some really sexy pieces that make a big difference without degrading ride, think about a set of Charley Bars with the weatherproof bushings. (I think weatherproof ones are now available from Elephant Racing) They tighten up the front end and steering response amazingly well, and will solve forever the funky ball joint problems these cars have. Plus they are works of art. I wrote an article on these pieces in the November 2001 issue of 911 & Porsche World.

i went back and looked, just for the sake of reference:



front konis 162 each

conversion if you have them do it 125 each

front springs 160-240, depending on what you do

rear koni coilover helpers 895



so, as little as 1219 with the stock front springs if you do it yourself



another less expensive, and more easily adjusted rear shock is the one KLA sells - you can save yourself about 100 bucks, and gain the advantage of being able to use them if you decide to delete the torsion bars - you would just need stiffer springs - i have these in my car, and am very happy with them on the street



my best suggestion is to drive cars with the different setups

Jay just had a ride in Silver Bullit today at 39 degrees, cold, damp and potholes. Maybe he could chime in on the ride. I actually don't think he realized what supension was on the car, he was distracted. But he certainly didn't feel a bone jarring ride. Biotechee also had a ride and only commented on how flat she cornered.

BTW Charlie arms are no longer available.

I'm running Leda's at somewhere north of 4x the stock spring rates, all solid bushings, full cage, race bucket...



I drive it to work in the off-season, about 40+ miles roundtrip to office each day. I'm okay with it, but must admit that it is getting on the edge of obnoxious now. Bloody ABS gets kicked off and needs to be reset all the time.



To each his own, I guess. Boss rode in it with me last night and wanted to see a chiropractor after about 10 minutes in the car <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Hi Pete,



Yes, kind of hard to pay close attention to the suspension when I was paying so much attention to the neck snapping acceleration with the new cams... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



I would say the ride is stiff, but certainly not jarring. We rode over a short course that included highway and side roads and it felt completely in control and not too harsh (for my liking). I'll be doing something with the suspension on my car sometime this Spring.

I did ride in Pete's car. (BTW- acceleration, and the linearity of it, was mucho impressive!)



My 968 has the M030 suspension. I really didn't feel there was much difference in ride between Pete's and the M030. Please keep in mind that I am by no means a suspension expert... And my frame of reference is skewed since I haven't driven mine in quite some time.



I do know that when I would hit large expansion joints on mine, it could be a little disconcerting to say the least. I am sure Pete's is probably a firmer suspension too, but I simply do not have that sensitive of a butt!



Would I want to drive my M030 daily? Nope. NE PA roads bite big time- thank Winter for that! But for the intended purpose (weekends, Summer nights, etc.), I have no problems with the M030, nor would I have problems with the Leda's.

What about the Bilstein Escort Cups from Lindsey Racing. $1600 total including camber plates and such. I have seen them on a couple of 968's/951's and they were dumped...not unreasonably stiff either.



My experiences - 951 Turbo S bone stock, 951 on Leda's, and 951 on Welt 250/Welt sways/968 Torsion bars. The M030 Koni coilovers on the turbo S were stiff, but easily driveable. The car still had noticable roll, but comparing to a stock 968 or stock 951, it was planted. Overall I like the way the car felt...solid, reassuring, and overall a good street/DE suspension setup.



951 on Leda's had more mods. Had Welt sways, late offset hubs, welt or other control arms, and probably more that I didn't see. Overall stiff, but easily drivable here in NC. Infact it was a daily driven car, and still is. At its softest setting (were the gas adjustable), it felt around as stiff as the M030. Dialed in, it was as solid as a rock, planted, and had we been on a track, I have no doubt that it would have been intense. Definantly not over kill for our roads...if anything it may have been too low for 'safe' daily driving, but it sure looked good!



951 on Welt 250# springs, Welt rear sway bar, 968 torsion bars. Actually to me, the most stiff of any of the cars. More bone jarring to me than the Leda's were dialed for the street. Still easily drivable though. Again the car was planted, but it didn't really lower the car much at all, if any. Car still has a solid 1.5-2" of fender gap. With the Welt rear sway, it was easy to dial in the amount of oversteer you would like, making it a really nice track tool over the M030.



If the roads around aren't that great, I would go with a 968 M030 package front coilover, rear coilover spring (maybe 80#'s) and some upgraded front springs. I like the setup, works well, and is proven.
