Where you a smart buyer?
#1

A couple of threads here and reading through the "How did you and your 968 meet?" thread made me wonder this question - we all know what we're supposed to do, but really now...did we do it?

I admit I was blinded by beauty but I got lucky that it is a good car.

Other than an initial electrical gremlin that seems to have sorted itself out with an extra ground same for me - I didn't even drive it before I bought it (stupid, stupid, stupid I was saying to myself) - but lucky so far...she's great!

Poke my eyes Blinded....

engine very strong but will need belts and rollers and cam tensioner check soon. Need to rebuild trans... New leather and new carpets....power steering issues...ebay buy without ever seeing in person

But compared to my recently divorced 1986 Alfa GTV6, there are so few problems I am still very happy!!(problem level was always proportionate to the amount of spares of have sitting on garage shelves, not many spares now.....and that fact that I can take apart my engine lift because I won't need it this week)

I am still in the 'grass is greener/ honeymoon' stage, which I think will last for many years....

Is there a 'both' option on this vote? "Cool - gotta have one" was the first reaction. Fortunately they are rare enough that it took me a couple of weeks to find a couple to drive so I learned a lot about the PPI here on this forum. I followed the advise and was prepared to walk away if it was a junker. A bit of a leaker, but the cam stuff was <15K old and the pinion gear was good. Looked great - out came the check book. New tires, some wax and the Ortega Highway for me.....

I got what I thought was a good - not great - deal, but it was after 8 months or so of searching, and I wasn't settling. Since then (5 years ago), probably every moving part has been replaced, so if I were to sell the car, the buyer would get a GREAT deal. But, that's not going to happen.

With .05% of the total vote in (based on our 5285 members) I think's it time to call this election.

We're not that smart.

I did well enough especially considering I bought a local car and didn't have to spend any $$$ on flying around to see other ones.

That being said, the local shop that did the PPI missed a number of issues that ended up costing me an extra $1500 or so.

I bought my car before I knew what a howling pinion bearing sounded like. And, I recall the PO suggested test driving the car with the widows down which would make it hard to heard the pinion bearing. About 4-6weeks after the purchase I started noticing the dreaded noise from the back [argh..!].

The silver lining was I installed a GT LSD while the transaxle was apart; now it hooks-up much better.

Yep, love at first sight.

I'll know in a few days as to whether I picked a good un in a few days.

As the service history was a little sparse, it's going in to a Porsche specialist tomorrow. I,m having new belts and pulleys just in case and a thorough check over whilst it's apart.

Wish me luck :-)

Ditto.

The Post Perchase Inspection showed only two faults.

Well, I got my car back today and boy was I lucky!

Balance belt had snapped at some point, but fortunately it did no more damage than ruin the lower cam belt cover.

All belts and rollers replaced and a list of jobs from the inspection. None of them too scary, but apparently the gasket on the oil filter consul(?) is a bit tricky. Does anyone have any knowledge of this? I have a couple of flexible brake pipes to replace and the front suspension bushes. These caused by the oil leak contamination from behind the oil filter

Total came to about $1300 but peace of mind is priceless. All in all the mechanic tells me I made a good buy, so I'm even happier than when I started.
