What do you love most about your 968?
#1

As I continue to tinker and modify my car, and go backward and forth with changes, I find myself consistently enjoying certain things about the car, its design, and its traits. These things are largely subjective, and what I like is not necessarily what somebody else might, but it started me thinking about what other people feel and think about their cars.

So, I have put together a poll to see what the general thinking is amongst the members.

Please feel free to add more specific comments that aren't on the list of questions.

I voted aesthetics, but in reality it is the overall look AND feel of the car for me.

I think they look amazing (especially the cab!) and the whole experience of driving it is fantastic. Purposeful stance, wonderful handling, excellent interior room, phenomenal brakes, top-notch build quality, etc.

I had become turned "off" by my M030 coupe handling / ride as I began to think it was too harsh. In reality, it is not that bad when I look back.... But once I drove the cab for the first time, it was like a whole 'nuther car! I love the way the cab feels on the road. It is, to put it simply, comfortable. It "fits" me.

And, I think the 968 cab is the best looking vert out there, top up or down.

It's the total package baby!

i had a tough time working out the choices, so i listed all the major things i could think of

i tend to agree in large with you, especially about the way the cab looks (i still wish they made a coupe too, instead of just a hatchback) - i also agree about the M030 - there are definitely better shock and strut setups out there nowadays

there are faster cars and there are a couple of other bodies i like better, but none of them have the feel to match on the inside of the car, and the more esoteric things i like about it and the way it drives

i also love that these cars cost almost nothing - way too easy to have fun with them without breaking the bank (n all too easy thing to do these days)

there were a number of them that drove me to this car, and if i had to pick just one, i'd say it was that ayn liked it, so it was easy for me to get involved with it - always best when the other half approves of the "mistress"

I guess I didn't vote because the choice is too difficult, there is quite a bit of overlap among the categories. Or (hope I am not being critical ) for me it has been:

1. Overall Engineering, Performance (Power), Handling, Reliability (Cost of Maintenance) [... the essence of Porsche at a low price.]

2. Aesthetics, Ergonomics, Practicality (Cargo Capacity, Back Seats, etc), Fuel Economy, Purchase Price, Exclusivity and Rarity, [... all wrapped up in one do-it-all package!]

That leaves these choices which were lower on the list for me: Resale Value, Ease of Modification, Status of Marque, Competiveness, Wife likes it.

can't possibly select ONLY one of the listed attributes in the survey insofar as no single characteristic stands above all others..there are about five of them tied for first place, in my book. however, the ones which least came into consideration were: resale value ( never selling it, though I am concerned about insurance proceeds if it ever gets totaled ) status of marque ( in this area porsches are all too common ) and wife likes it ( though if she hated it, I might have had second thoughts )

we have some remarkably long highway onramps with sweeping curves where I live, and to this day, I swear I get the biggest grin on my face taking this car all-out on those ramps entering the highway... I tried the same in a C4,

an M5, a Vette and the sensation is not even close. btw, this was the case even before I did the suspension mods, so you can only imagine the thrill I get now.. that's what I like the most I guess - the 968's " balance of power" handling

I'm not a fan of cabs, but I have to agree that with the exception of some 50s/60s/early 70s alphas and dinos , and not to forget the BMW Z8, the cab is among the the best looking cars ever made - and admittedly better looking and less dated than our coupes. damn hatchback !

I love the way it looks when I walk up to it.

Then when I mash the gas I could care less what it looks like - it is just so damned fun to drive. I voted for asthetics nonetheless as I spend more time admiring it than driving it.

lol - well, i was really trying to nail it down a bit

i make a clear distinction between power and handling - these cars are definitely not anything close to what i would call powerful, in fact i think they are pretty slow - so for me performance is all but non-existent

they seem to be a bit more reliable than other porsches, which are notoriously unreliable, so i thought that was worthy of separate consideration - remember that "reliable" these days means it needs nothing but oil changes on a regular basis for at least the first 60,000 miles

i also felt that what they looked like and what they felt like sitting in them was worthy of separation - take, for instance, the boxster or the 996 - i like the looks of the cars fine - i can't stand where things are when i sit in them - others think they are perfect

practicality was a thing all of its own too - again, siting the boxster as an example of non-practical - no chance of 2 full sets of golf clubs in there, let alone, the kids, luggage, or the family dog

fuel economy is easily separated from other porsches too, as well as other cars - compare this one with the 928 and you'll see that one quickly enough

i think you can understand why i was trying to define the one most chosen trait that was the "swing vote" in choosing the car

for me, the car did not measure up in many areas, and i certainly could have picked a better performer, better handler, more fuel efficient car, or inexpensive car - i might have even liked the looks of something better - i definitely did not want a porsche, and that fact alone almost squashed the deal - the big selling factor for me was that she approved of it, as opposed to other cars i might have chosen, which paved the road for me to develop the car to meet the other areas where i felt it was lacking

i wouldn't change a thing, but it was a rather unique course that led me here - i just wanted to know what single factor above all others brought others to this place - i think everybody can pin down one thing that, if it wasn't there, would change the way they felt about the car, and might have influenced the purchase

I would vote overall driver feel.

It is not fast, but the feedback is better than 90% of anything on the road.

It is fairly easy to work on once all the specialty tools are had.

Parts are IMHO cheap for the most part.

Mine has been very reliable for the most part.

And I do like the rarity factor, all of which has kept from getting an M#.

I still see an M3 in the near future.

I put Ergonomics for my vote, because I have had 3 of the series over the years, and I feel very much at home in it.

Fine ! If I must... it was the Aesthetics. There are only three cars whose looks I like better than the 968 : DB9 , Dino and Z8

I can't afford a DB 9 ( well, I can but that kind of expenditure will lead to divorce...and I can't afford that )

The Dino is pathetically underpowered and handles like crap, so as much as I'd probably spend each day of my life admiring it, driving would not be nearly as much fun as the 968

Z8 - one word : CAB and I'd have to remove the BMW crests/logos ( can't stand the stigma of driving a beemer - sorry Ayn )

Among the available choices, I voted for "overall engineering," but I would say that my favorite thing about the car is actually its versatility. It's comfortable (for a sports car/GT), and fun to drive on the street, and is also a great DE car. In fact, it's almost the ideal car to cut with your teeth on the track, because it is so well balanced, and powerful enough but not over-powered (euphemistically referred to as a "momentum car"). I call it my underpowered Corvette, because of its similar layout.

I guess it's the combination of aesthetics, feel, and interior room. Combined, I call it the "smile factor"!.

I voted:

Practicality (Cargo Capacity, Back Seats, etc)

Having owned various 911s, I really appreciate the Coupe's "hatchback."

With the back seats and hatch area, my 944S2 allows me to leave the pickup in the driveway and drive a Porsche all day long for work and errands.

"Excellence" did a comparo of the Cayman and 968. Both held about the same amount of stuff. However, the 968 Coupe was/is far easier to load and unload.

I received a very strong offer on my 944S2; and am having a terrible time struggling with the thought of selling.

Also, my Porsche buddy is selling his Speedster.

That said, the Speedster is an absolutely wonderful Porsche, but hardly a realistic daily driver and/or replacement for my trusty 944S2.

I may have to settle for "both!"

I chose over all engineering as that seemed to be the most all encompassing option.

Overall engineering.

I had very little trouble working on almost every aspect of the car.

Once you start taking the car apart you can trully appricaite the engineering.

I just couldn't wait for stuff to break so I could work on the car. (even though stuff never did)

Just about everything has easy access and can be easily replaced.

Although I believe the Porsche engineers had a good laugh thinking about all those DIYers trying to change the oil without making a mess.

Ok, I finally went with over all engineering - seems the best combination of all the things I like about it. Exclusiveness, Looks, Handling, Storage/ergonomics, MPG, easy to work on (lets face it - you can actually work on it yourself), an smile factor - in no particular order...what we really need is to be able list your top 5(?) with declining value(54321) and then see how they total up...

I would at least have an easier time making that list than limited to just one choice....its too hard to lock it down to one thing

lol - i understand - i think we can all agree that there are a number of things that draw us to the car - i am not suggesting that the others don't exist as attractions, but rather just to try to figure out which one stands above the others

i'm also not trying to give any more credence to one factor over another - it's merely idle curiosity

thanks everybody for participating

lol - yes, the introspective pondering one does when one has 3 minutes of unoccupied time to contemplate one's navel, and the extension of those thoughts and queries as a result
