What did you do for your 968 this week?

Bill,  I’m really glad to hear you’re unhurt ( physically that is, anyway ) , cars are replaceable.   Well, some much harder than others ..replacing a 968 nowadays is a huge challenge .   But I digress, that sounds like a scary accident, so once gain, good to hear you’re ok.

Ordered hood shocks (lifters) from Sunset Imports , only to find out via email  AFTER I PAiD that it’s  back ordered , they come form Germany , and the expected arrival is approx 3-6 weeks , but not with any certainty.   WTF  !    I probably should have ordered the OE equivalent from Pelican  , in stock, and at 1/3 the cost !    Ugh, I hate to cancel any orders , but waiting that long is annoying .

Thanks for the kind words, guys.   It really was an eye-opening experience.   I replaced the Highlander with an ‘06 Lexus RX400h hybrid in outstanding condition with only 105K miles.    Someone else paid 90% of the original purchase price for the first third of the car’s life, and I paid  10% for the second two thirds if it’s life.    I’ve only purchased one new car in my life … never again!

Get 4 of those Sachs ones on close out. Save 2 for next time. 99% chance they’re OEM. That’s what I got in 2016 and they’re still going strong.

I ordered the Sachs ones.   I would hope they’d be in really good shape if you got them in 2016 ; mine are the original ones from 1994, and they have just started to weaken now..

I could not find were to list this question, I have complete set of 944 and 968 repair manuals plus buliten updates. They are like new. A guy offered $100.00 for all does that sound right? Thank you

Are the hood lifers on our cars really easy to remove and to install the new ones ?  Some can be simply pried out from their slot by hand  and they’ll pop out , and then the new ones put in the same way, popping them in the slots at each end .    But in some cars the  ends are threaded in so you need a wench to remove the nut holding the ends in place.    Looking at the car, it seems ours are easy pop out /  pop in ones , is that the case ?

Before you remove the lift cylinders, there's a clip on the end that needs to be pushed forward first. But, otherwise it's a straight forward process.

I suspect it depends on your connections, and of course the hood you live in.  In Haiti then you have a good chance of getting all the lifers removed even if you want to sacrifice your 968 in the process, Colombia same deal I suspect, elsewhere it depends on how much you are willing to pay  Big Grin  Big Grin  sorry Dan, couldn't help myself.

 

Pneumatic lifters .... yep, there is a small clip to remove and then the socket slips on/off the ball ....

I'm in the process of registering my 968 as a "voiture de collection" here in France .... the equivalent of vintage/veteran ... I don't know which.  Part of the process is to take copious photos of all sorts of "parts" accompanied by today's newspaper.  Most were okay but for the engine number as I didn't know where to find it.

 

After some frustrating searches on google, on this site, on many other 968/Porsche sites (don't you get fed up with  ... "well Im not sure but" ..... "or have you tried" ..... this is a specific question which requires a specific answer .... "where is the engine number stamped?" .... if you don't know then don't waste my time :whine: ) anyway,  I decided to call Waylander ..... should be first resort, but that's unfair .... thank's Martin ....

 

So found it, buried under decades of grime, almost impossible to photograph ..... but I have a "pot inspection camera" .... inside cylinders, not weed .....

 

Here's a series of photos which I shall also duplicate under a different theme as I was surprised I couldn't find it with search "engine number stamp/location".  

 

So, looking beside pot 4, right hand side, to a plate (maybe 2inch x 1 inch) that is most likely covered in grime ... originally I could see no numbers, so I squirted WD40 onto it and then rubbed it down with a small cloth on the end of a "grab stick" soaked in White Spirit .... the numbers appeared

   

 

And then with my pot camera ...

Too funny !  Always welcoming a good laugh .      Cool, good to know ; I’ll just use a broom handle or something like that to make sure that hood does not fall on my head during the job.

I think $100 is way too cheap. IIRC, my 912 Manual (which was a single binder engine addendum to the 7-8 911 manuals) was $150. In 1990.

 

I’d list them on eBay with a $500 buy it now price and accept offers. 

 

If I wasn’t too old myself (and not planning on selling mine next month) I’d buy them in a heartbeat)

thank you the reply I really thought $100 was to low.  I am in NY it would cost a small fortune to ship to Washington state. I think I have 12 loose leaf's and bulletin's

When I did mine, they weren’t completely shot. Once I held the hood up for a few seconds, it would stay up. I undid all the clips, then held the hood up with one hand while I popped the old cylinder off with the other on one side and replaced it. Once one new one was on, it stayed up by itself while I replaced the other side. 

 

If you have an “assistant” to hold the hood up, it’s a piece of cake.

Just looked at my maintenance/mileage spreadsheet.  I've not done much in the last 6 years. Besides the occasional start in the garage, I've driven less than 100 miles in the last several years. A very sad state considering I've had the car for 16 years and it was my daily driver until around 2018 when it went through a full respray. Then it was too beautiful to drive everyday. Well that's going to change, I've booked car in for new belts  (7 years old) and bits, getting fresh tyres and a new battery.  Time to get back on the road for some weekend blasts.  I've been loving my F-type V6 P380  (the noise & the power) and have almost forgotten how fun the 968 was to drive.
