2018 968 West Coast Gathering

June 29-July 2, 2018

There will be a gathering of 968 owners this summer in Sonora, CA, June 29^th to July 2^nd.

Sonora is located on historic CA Highway 49, at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Mountains!

Think Winding Mountain Roads!

In the beautiful Sierra Nevada Foothills, in the heart of California’s “Gold Country” lies Sonora, named after the miners from Sonora Mexico who settled the City in 1848. Known as the “Queen of the Southern Mines”, Sonora still holds onto its historic downtown charm while thriving as the commercial, government and cultural center for the region. This should be a great base for scenic drives, social time with fellow 968’ers and exploring the local region!

For those who made the 968 Gathering in S. Lake Tahoe, this is a little southwest of that and we will have an opportunity to enjoy some of the same styles of roads and scenery! Stops are being planned at several nearby historical venues.

 

 

The base hotel is the Sonoran Inn http://www.thesonorainn.com with discount rates of between $135-$145 per night; depending on room type. There are other higher-priced hotels/inns/B&Bs and some lower-priced lodging to suit all pocketbooks and tastes.  One caution, there are no first floor rooms at the hotel and the elevator is under repair and may not be operational. If this is a concern, they have an adjacent property with first floor rooms that you can book.

 

Make your reservations no later than May 29^th to check-in on Friday, June 29^rd and check-out on Monday, July 2^nd

The block of rooms will be released after May 29^th.

 

Ask for the “Porsche Club 968” special rates. Reservations should be direct to the hotel at 209-532-2400

It doesn't appear that I will make this gathering. We are putting our house in Alameda up for sale in May and will relocating. The two top relocation candidates are Santa Fe, New Mexico or somewhere in the Willamette Valley. I expect that we will midway through relocation by the time this event takes place.

 

I find it ironic that I am unable to comfortably retire in the State that I was borne and raised in. The cost of living in this state is unreasonably high and the Bay Area far too crowded to be enjoyable. It was a great place to grow up and go to school in. Three of my nieces were all top flight performers in high school, yet despite the fact that their Parents and Uncles were all graduates of the University of California, they were rejected. All are or will attend USC. On the upside, the equity I have in my house will permit me to pay cash for a house almost anywhere I want to live outside of California.

Sorry you will not be making it this year. My vote is for the Willamette Valley area. Our daughter attended Willamette and I love the south end of the valley. Things are green and the people are pretty cool. If you have any questions about the Reno area, please let me know. It would be great to have a fifth 968 in our little town.

 

I just looked at a house in SF, the prices were increasing on the house at over $11,000 PER MONTH! That's better than working.

RAP, I assume that you are referring to my nieces. The University of California has found it very lucrative to admit out of state and foreign students who pay a premium to attend. The University Charter requires that the University accept a percentage of applications from California Residents and they do. The problem is that are two many residents. When I graduated high school in 1966, if you were in the top 12% of your graduating class you were assured of a slot in a UC campus. In the Bay Area we have Chinese (mostly Hong Kong residents) parents who purchase houses in the Bay Area and send their kids to live here in order to establish residency to lower the cost of of a college education a public university should the kid get accepted. 

 

I was very fortunate to have attended school and university in California during what I lovingly remember as the 'GoldenAge"of public education in this State. My Piemontese Grandmother told me once that a free public school education and a low cost university was truly a gift from God, and it surely was.

Oh man, somewhat OT but talk about one of the most formidable state universities, situated only half an hour away from where we held our numerous west coast 968 meetings : Cal Poly . Not a UC system school, but as highly accredited and as reputable as any private school in the Sate ..it was even giving Stanford a run for its money ( just the engineering disciplines, that is..)   Back in " the golden age " the cost of attending it was affordable to practically everyone, and eligible state residents had top priority . Good luck trying to get into Cal Poly nowadays ...
