weight of Cup2 wheels
#1

Hi guys,

Does anyone know what the weight is of the OEM Cup2 wheels?

Front are 7.5 x 17 and rears are 9 x 17.

I am looking at replacing them with the RH three piece copy of the Speedline RS wheel.

I just don't want to go to a heavier wheel.

Regards,

Steve

Steve, I have heard that the Cup II wheels are lighter than the cup I wheels but do not know exactly what they weigh. good idea to keep the lightest wheels you can find. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

i believe you mean "CUP" wheels, which came on 94 and later cars, as opposed to "C2T or C2Turbo" wheels, which came on 92-early 94 cars - common misnomer on these sites

the "CUP" wheels are 18# front and 19.5# rear

these weights are for OEM - replicas are heavier

Hi Flash,

Yes, it is the standard 17" wheel as fitted to the 968 club sport model. It is the same looking wheel as the early 993's had I think.

Your weights are in pounds correct ?

Many thanks,

Steve

The CupI CupII designation is common terminology world wide in the Porsche lexicon, not limited to technical bulletin boards. Maybe came from the Mille Miglia product line.

cool - i wondered where the misnomer may have originted - that is the first site that i have seen that actually printed it - every other retail and resource site i've seen has used CUP and C2T - it's only been on the chat boards that i have seen the cup 1 and cup 2 references, and i was soundly spanked for using them on rennlist, corrected, and referred to the correct names and their resources

Yeah, weird....

I've always known them as Cup II's... as opposed to the flatter, more rectangular spoked Cup I.

I have been told the 3 piece RH replicas of the Turbo RS Speedline are around 21 and 24 lbs per wheel... they are 18" and wider than the OEM's so I expect a bit more weight but is that extra 3 & 5 lbs too much unsprung weight? Apparently, the 3 piece are a lot lighter than the 1 piece replicas.

steve

it is a lot, but within tolerance, depending on application, based on the experiences of others

if you are racing, or doing a lot of track, that's about the limit, and you can expect to wear things out more than with the lighter wheels (bushings, bearings, shocks, struts, etc)

on a street car, you should be fine

keep in mind that the tires far outweigh the wheels, so you also need to account for that added weight

I have a set of Cup2's (993 part#'s) that I need to dismount. I should weigh them.

I believe they are forged and should be maybe 18-19lb's a wheel. To be determined.

if they are the same ones we are talking about, they should be pressure cast and the weights above

I have the 993 CUP 17x9 wheels as well and concur on Flash's 18# and 19.5# numbers. When I saw the numbers from Flash I thought no way so I double checked. Oddly, http://www.wheelweights.net shows the 968 17x9 weighing 23 pounds. I had heard that the 993 wheels were lighter, but have never seen this substantiated.

Knowing that the 993 CUP wheels are so light changes my thoughts on upgrading them to CCW or Kodiak as those would only get me a pound or two per wheel. Hmmmm.

While we are on the subject of wheels, I am looking for a pair of cup I (flat spoke) 17x9 wheels for the rear of my 968. Not looking for concours quality, just straight and true and no need for center caps. Bob Blackwell.

Guys - the bad news is Cup-II wheels are heavier than you (or I) would like!

I have weighed mine while stripped:-

Fronts - 20 lbs

Rears - 23 lbs

This is confirmed in an amazing list of all wheel weights I have. (having trouble attaching it for some reason will try again later)

are you sure yours aren't replicas? is there a part number on the inside? the replicas are about 2lbs heavier each

2 different charts have them at the weights i mentioned above - it wouldn't suprise me, as i always thought that was awfully light, but with 2 different sources saying the same thing, and me not haveing one to weigh to verify, i just went with that info

gudday Flash - I assume they are factory wheels, but I will double check for part number inside and let you know. I was surprised how heavy they are !

no worries - that is actually what i would have expected them to weigh, and was surpised at the charts

if they are real ones, they'll have a porsche part number on the inside, likely on a web

i look forward to finding out for sure
