Water Pump Replacement - Help
#1

The water pump has a very small leak, so I need to replace it. I have searched all of the posts and found various tips, but nothing complete in one article. The service manuals do not even have a section for replacing the water pump [unless that is part of the 944T manual]. Can anyone provide help from previous experience? I guess I will replace the belts and tensioners also while I am in there.

Thanks, I'll look forward to the writeup. Here is what the service center said, I think I can do it myself for alot less. "The coolant pump is leaking, the timing belt and counter balance belt should be replaced when the pump is done. The front seals should also be replaced, $1495" Can I assume you guys agree that it can be done for less? Clarks Garage really does not have a good writeup for the 968, just the 944. How different is the 968 from the 944 Turbo? I

$1500 is what I was quoted also, I did the job for about $500 (inlcuding beer <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

huskydog - difference is the 968 has an auto adjuster for the timing belt that actually works! It makes the job a little different, not by much. You have to very slowly compress the auto-tensioner and then place a small allen wrench, or suitable sub, to keep the auto-tensioner disengaged. If that tool pops out while working, it's a major pain to get the tensioner back together.

Other than that, it's the same as the turbo...

ether_joe - are you commenting on my avatar? If so, thanks! It was one of those "guardian Riders" that protect military funerals. About 100 of them showed up to a Recon Marine's funeral in San Antonio. I'd known the Marine since he was 12 - hunting buddy...

I had my watrer pump go this summer and I was going to do the job myself, but work got crazy so I had it done. My shop had to do the job three times because the first rebuilt pump they installed leaked, so they replaced it with a second which also leaked. They were then able to source a new one from Germany which has not leaked.

If your going to go to the trouble to do this yourself, I'd opt for a new rather than a rebuilt pump just as a hedge against having to do the job more than once.

My mechanic was able to recoupe most of his additional labor costs from the used pump supplier, but it was a huge pain for all involved.

huskydog,

Replace it fast. Mine spun the blade off of the shaft-no leak just boil over emergency time. Got stuck on the freway on the way to work!

My PM did mine too and while they remove the front cover they check belts etc. $1300-1500 is normal. If the belt is replaced remember to re-tension.
