Water Pump & Belt Roller Change?
#1

I'm getting ready to change my timing and balance belts and would like your input on if I should change the water pump and rollers. My 95 has 59K on it. The belts alone were changed at 37K in 2002. I know the belts should be done, but what about the pump, rollers, and tensioners? Thanks Shawn

That's a tough question. If there's no record of them ever having been done, I'd replace all the rollers, and the tensioner, as they're relatively easy to replace, and not expensive. As far as the water pump, that's a harder question. I'm sure there will be lots of differences of opinion on this one (to change or not to change, new vs. remanufactured), but my two cents would be that with only 59K miles, I would leave it alone, and replace it at the next belt change in three years or 30K miles or so, whichever comes first (most likely the three years).

wow - those belts are WAY overdue - don't delay on that - drive it straight to the shop - mine broke at only 25k miles, but they had 5 years on them, which is 2 too many

i would agree about the rollers - change them

as for the water pump, if the coolant has been flushed regularly, and phosphate free coolant has been used, along with distilled water, the only remaining question with the water pump is the seal - the bearing and all that is probably fine - the seal is rubber and 15 years old, and there is no telling if it is in good shape or not, even if there are no leaks - if tap water or other than phosphate free coolant has been used in the system, then i would change the pump without question

peace of mind might dictate just changing it anyway - that's what i did with the white car, even with only 14k on it

Thanks for the fast replys! Yea, I guess the rollers and tensioners are a no-brainer. I'll probably get the kit from Paragon. It looks like the car was dealer serviced most of its life and I see one coolant change. I kinda would like to change the pump regardless. Any good sources for a rebuilt part? I see Pelican has a new pump for a little over $300 (got to love these rare, low number cars)!

I got my remanufactured pump from Paragon Products, for something like $120. I installed it three years ago, and have had no problems with it.

Don't forget the other failure from original pumps, the impeller. Mine was plastic and spun, mind you after 125K km. There is also a tensioner upgrade which I have coming from RSB, not sure what year this was to fix though. I bought a brand new OEM water pump on eBay from an Deutschepartsusa for 195.00 (I think?) so new ones aren't much more if you are nervous about reman parts.

That's a great price. I got a quote of about $600 from Sunset, so I figured that was the best I could do. At that price, I would go new.
