I can vouch for the damage that can be done by an "exploding" damper plate.



My current 968 cab is a 1993 tip which I bought with the story that "it needs a bell housing and starter because the guy ran over something in the road and cracked the bell housing and ripped off the starter."



To make a long story short, that was not the case. The simpleton who owned the car thought it was ok to drive around with a torn damper because of the "limp home" feature and must have "mashed the throttle" one too many times. Well, the damper exploded and took out the bell housing, bent the torque tube (requiring replacement) and ripped off one of the bell housing mounting ears (which required welding). After all that, the car which I affectionately named Josephine runs and drives just beautiful and I drive it as often as I can during the summer up here in the northeast.



Two lessons to be learned:

1) be careful with a questionable damper plate. They can do some serious damage if they fail in a catastrophic fashion.

2) some people (especially women) get very uptight when your car has a female name, but sometimes the name just fits and you just go with it and live with the consequences.

Yeah, definitely avoiding the double gear drop acceleration jolts, the feedback from the car when you do that sends a very clear signal that it's not built to withstand too many of those before something gives up ..you FEEL it, it's intuitive somehow..even to a mechanically challenged person such as I am, clueless about the flex damper composition and durability , with the SC catapulting the car when you stomp on it, you sense there is a lot of stress on some component . Conversely, my other 968 which has a stage 3 SC but is a six speed, is a considerably faster car than the tip is, yet not feel at all like I'm stressing the transmission when I stomp on it..probably because I don't drop two gears and of course with a manual shift I the acceleration is not a sudden surprise, it feels more gradual / linear. Hopefully less components suffering on that one :-)

Did you ever find out how to resolve this? Mine does the same thing. It gets a lil better once the car warms up, but it shouldn't be like this.

Still vibrates much more than the six speed at idle , but I just got used to it by now.. Having raised the rpm at idle to about 1100 eliminated the vibration, but it I think it threw off the ICV / TPS readings and was starting to act up in other ways, so I had everything retired to " normal " . As for the double gear downshift resolution, the car was re-tuned to take a little power / torque off the typical stage 3 levels, but at 60-65 mph range if you stomp on, it'll still downshift 2 gears , so the ONLY solution seems to be : don't do that !

Would like referral of shop to diagnose my vibrations on revs in the 3300-4000 rpm range. Balance shaft timing has been checked and eliminated. (I remain skeptical). Could be heat shields, TT bearings. ??? Otherwise runs great. Even cruising at 4500-5000 rpms. Im near vegas but would consider shops SoCal or Arizona. Thanks in advance.

I'm a newbie to the forum but have owned a 1994 cab tiptronic since 2012. I had a vibration between 2,000 & 3,000 rpms a while back. Had it looked by a porsche mechanic he said it was a heat shield and fixed it. No more noise. Unfortunately I didn't ask where the shield in question was located.
