Variocam inspection
#1

Most of the parts have been arriving for the engine transplant (968 into my 924S track car), so I began working on the engine tonight. First I thought that I'd check the variocam and see what shape it was in. Below is a pic, to me it looks great, what do you think?

Can you post a picture from above?

Also close up pictures of the teeth would be helpful in identifying any issues.

Here are some pictures from my 968 for comparison

and the wear on the phenolic blocks is VERY important also. If they have more than 1mm wear, they should be replaced.

I did not see I chipped tooth when I visually inspected it. However, when I posted the photo, I thought the same thing, I think it's just from teh flash. However, I'm going to have an second look and get a few more pics.

Ok, here are a few more pics, not the best but my camera doesn't do all that well with closeups. The blocks have no more than 0.5 mm if that. There are no chips in any of the teeth.

Tim,

Everything in the pictures seems to look great! Be sure and turn the crankshaft a bit so you can see the other teeth that are currently out of view. So far, so good! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

I don't see any obvious wear. Count yourself lucky.

I hope my daily driver 968 looks as good, but I'm concerned. I'll start on that job once Frankenstein is built.
