vague steering at high speeds
#61

Not to hijack this thread too much, but yes, 250 is still very soft for the track. I've only driven one other 968, a bone stock one, and it was much mushier than mine is currently. I'm in the process of completely revamping my suspension (all rubber bushings replaced with solid or spherical, camber plates, t-bar delete, much stiffer springs, and Moton Clubsport shocks) which I'm hoping will drastically alter my car's handling characteristics.

i don't think you wasted your money on the shocks - but, you can't expect much from a shock - all it will do is control the spring better - it won't change stiffness or body roll (other than initial set, where it could resist a bit more than the stock shock)

as for how many turns, it's all about the spring rate - i think the shocks are set for a range of 150 to 350 or 400lbs wheel rate (not to be confused with spring rate) in 50lb 1/2 turn increments, with 150 being 1/2 turn from full soft (because you never really want to run shocks at full soft)

regarding my sway bars, i have not made any others than the ones on my car - there just hasn't been enough interest in them to justify it - it's not really something that makes sense in one-off form, and not enough people have expressed real interest in having them - i love them though, and am very glad i did it - much better than the M030 bars were for my spring setup

Hi flash thanks so much for all your help and thanks to the rest of you guys this forum is fantastic.

I have ordered a mo30 rear anti roll bar with some poly bushes along with poly front roll bar bushes.

One thing to note i do have p6000 pirelli tyres on my 17" cup front alloys unlike the p zero rears i now beleive a certain element of slop has come from here. i intend to change them as i know p6000 have soft sidewall unlike the p zero.]

Just an observation.

Once again thanks so much for all your help.

you probably won't like the poly - they get noisy

you only ordered the rear bar? what do you have on the front? it's very important that the bars be matched

The front MO30 is not available here in the uk anymore which is a pain. I have a 26.8 front bar currently pal.

hmmm - well, i think you're going to have the potential for more of the problem you have now - the front is going to get even more vague feeling relative to the rear, and even more noticeable body roll, as the rear will tend to tuck in and the front will still want to roll - you could pick up oversteer too

definitely set it on the hole farthest out

I’m reinstalling my steering rack with new seals, mounts, boots and rod ends this weekend. I’d like to know if setting the toe angle when the suspension is hanging down unsupported is close to what you get when it is back on the ground? Also, when I drive to town to have it set do you have a recommended setting for driving the Colorado mountains the in winter?

Hi guys, ok so i am now convinced i have a better idea what the vague/light steering feel is.

Today i noticed that when at slow speed sometimes the cars steering felt light as it should and then it changed and went heavy and required a more effort at exactly the same speed/conditions. Also i drove the car down a fast road (70mph) the steering felt nicely weighted as it should then a little later i drove down the same piece of road and the steering felt positively light and lacked weight.

So now comes the question does this sound like a problem with the pas pump?? i think it is as the rack is leak free and has no play not even in the UJ.

One thing to note when i bought the car it had a severe pas fluid leak and i beleive that at some point the pas fluid was run very low which would put the pump under a great deal of pressure and possibly cause damage.

I will keep my finger's crossed you 968 experts say its the pump and i will get another.

Thanks in advance for help sorry to bring this thread back to life.

I've replaced my steering shaft, rack, rack bushings, pressure hose, all return hoses and reservoir and rebuilt my ps pump due to encountering the exact same issues you've described - sometimes the steering weight felt fine, other times (most of the time) it felt much too heavy. I then changed out my tires and even tried wrapping my ps lines with heat insulation to keep the fluid cooler and I'm STILL running into the problem. Hey, no ps fluid leaks tho!

Over the weekend I took a freeway ramp at around 75, and for a moment in the middle of the corner the steering feel completely went away - like the steering wheel was disconnected from the wheels! I'm not sure what the hell is going on, but I don't like it one bit.

Maybe the whole problem was the pump and the re-seal didn't really fix it? Possible I suppose, its the only thing I haven't completely replaced yet. Getting real tired of throwing money and time at this, but I've GOT to have proper steering - the way it is now is basically ruining my enjoyment of the car.

Bombfactory i feel the same but i think its the pump. I spoke to a 968 specialist here in the UK, they race 968 also so i thought i would give them a call.

The minute i mentioned the problem he said yes we have seen this a few times and now quite a few 993's are experiencing the same problem.

He said i should change the rack and the pump, but the fact that you have done the rack leads me to think i will do the pump first they offered me a used pump with warranty for £75.00 or approx $130.00 i think i will order it up.

I will PM you once it is fitted pal.

At least i know i am not alone and what you said about ruining the experience of owning the car i agree.

thanks for the post it helped

Potentially excellent news! Let me know if a new pump does the trick for you and I'll do the same asap! BTW, my car has 125K miles on it - I assume its still on the original ps pump - so maybe it's just time for a new one.

My first step in this (mis)adventure was resealing the pump. When that didn't solve the problem I had to keep going. Installing a rebuilt rack from AutoZone didn't show any improvement. Replacing all ps lines showed a very slight improvement, as I did have some leaks. Adding insulation to the pressure hose and the return line where it runs near the header also made a very slight improvement. And getting rid of the 6 year old front tires (that were on the car when I bought it) probably made the biggest improvement in steering feel and response, but the intermittent too-heavy steering in corners is still there. Maybe the pump is just not putting out enough pressure.

I also have a much-too-heavy clutch pedal. That, combined with the mack truck steering, just absolutely kills any driving pleasure this car must surely have. When both these issues are finally fixed I'll be a very happy boy.

Ok so took the car for a 50 mile drive this evening and steering felt great at high speed where the problems seems to be most of the time(light steering feel) 90% of the time it was heavy and weighted well. I even shook the steering side to side slightly at high speed and the car hardly changed direction which is exactly what i remebered of my old 968cs which was one of the most stable cars i had ever driven.

Then mid journey i flet a lightness in the wheel which is hard to describe so i did the steering shake again. This time it felt light and darted in either direction. Exactly the same conditions/speed as before. How odd i thought.

I am convinced that the pump is the issue so in the morning i will order the pump my car a has also 100k plus miles so i concur with it may just be time to change it.

Hi flash whats the news on my short shifter kit?? are they in stock for me to order?
