Steering Noise
#1

When first starting my 968, especially when the temperature outside is cold, the steering makes a fairly loud noise as turning the steering wheel, especially sitting still. It sounds like power steering belt maybe, but once the car is up to temperature the noise goes away. The colder it is, the louder the noise, the longer it takes to go away. usually with 5 miles it has quieted down, but the noise is less perceptible at speed anyway, so it is hard to say with certainty that noise subsides once up to operating temperature. On the few 70 degree days we've had in the last couple of weeks, I still had some noise, but very little by comparison. Where should I start?

To test if it is the belt, start the car cold (so it makes the niose) and mist the belt with water. If it is the belt the noise will change (may get louder or stop), if it does not change I would suspect the pump as failing.

I had this issue on one of me previous cars (Audi A4). The issue was solved by draining the powersteering fluid and filling up with a fresh batch.

Thanks guys. Interestingly enough I had a power steering issue on my truck not long ago. Turned out to be the high pressure line and I was just certain it was the pump. It ended up costing less than 100 bucks. Maybe I'll get lucky again. I have to put it in the shop for pinion bearing in January anyway. It will likely end up there until warm weather. My indie is slow, but he treats me well. IS there anything else I should do while fixing the pinion issue? I have a new clutch already. How much would I have to pay for a LSD?

Out of interest, mine has the same noise. My Porsche guy said that the problem lies with the specific type of hoses. Many of the aftermarket hoses we get here in Australis result in the noise. He assures me that there is absolutely no problem with the system and hoses from Enzed (our main supplier of hoses here) will usually exhibit this noise. He could not guarantee that replacing hoses will fix the problem as it is a very flakey issue???

I will put up with mine as it only happens occassionally. Seems better in cooler weather - not that we have too much of that in Brisbane.

Good luck!!

Peter

You beat me to it. I had a similar problem in our Chrysler Minivan (should I hold onto this car in case it becomes a collectors' item ?), and I drained the power steering fluid with a suction pump, refilled the reservoir with fresh ATF (not power steering fluid), started the engine, turned the wheel to both extremes about ten times, then repeated the process about three times. The noise completely went away. I've been meaning to do the same treatment on the 968 before it starts making noise. Is there a recommendation as to which type of ATF to use? Thanks.

The manual recommends AT fluid, so I would imagine not. I'm just wondering what type of AT fluid is recommended, with all the advances in fluids since these cars were built.
