Steering wheel scraping noise

My steering wheel is making a scraping noise when being turned.

I haven't hit any big bumps or anything like that. It started doing it now that the weather is getting colder.

Any suggestions for what it might be?

Winston,

I had the same issue... Squeek/scraping noise when cold.

Mine was from the electrical slip ring (horn?) behind the wheel.

I fixed it by pulling the wheel and putting a spot of grease on the contact pin. Easy.

There are some other good suggestions in the thread too, but the cold weather similarity makes me think you have the same problem as me.


My fix has held up well. Not a hint of a scrape or squeak since...

Winston,

Just pulled mine to repair a horn "gremlin", which caused my horn to go off on its own. Fun!

You need a T30 torx bit, and I think a 21mm socket (or is it 19mm? - you'll find out) with an extension.

Disconnect the battery cable for at least 45min beforehand to aviod the airbag light activating when you reconnect everything. Anyone jump in if I am screwing this up. After you loosen the torx screws (make sure to sink the tool all the way in and apply pressure while breaking it loose or you will strip that sucker, very easily...) located at 3 and 9 o'clock on the body of the steering wheel (if you have OEM), pull the airbag straight out. It should come easily.

After I pulled the red connector out of the airbag, I used my legs to brace the steering wheel while turning the nut off to remove the wheel.

Remove the black cover (4 screws - don't lose them) to expose the slip ring. Use the appropriate lube and put everything back together.

30 min tops.

Great description Scott!

That about covers it with the exception of making sure that your wheel is dead straight when you remove it so that you can be sure to get it back on straight when you're done.

Funny you mention the socket extension. When I did mine, I couldn't find my extension for my 1/2" ratchet and really struggled to get the nut off the wheel.
I should have stopped there and gotten the right tool, but I already had 45 minutes invested in the battery discharge...
It turned out fine, but there was a lot of swearing involved.

I now own a wide assortment of 1/2' extensions.

Good catch, Jamie. Yah, get some whiteout and mark the wheel and shaft so that they will line up again when the wheel goes back on. Mine actually has a nicely etched scratch in the metal on both wheel and shaft. [img]style_emoticons/<#EMO_DIR#>/biggrin.gif[/img]

Yep, I have exactly the same issue. I have replaced the wheel with a nice Momo one and tried making adjustments to the slip ring at the same time - worked for while. I'm just putting up with it now.
