Clacking noise when steering to right or left
#1

when turning steering all the way to the right or left there is a clacking noise

at first I thought it was steering rack but had a zf installed 7 months prior

also replaced power steering pump and steering Colum

It seems to be the suspension strut mount. When steering is turned it moves weirdly. are there any upgrades for this piece Any suggestions

Unfortunately the stock strut mounts for our cars are crazy expensive. Aftermarket camber plates are available from a number of different places, but produce a harsher ride, since they're generally solid mounts and contain no rubber. If you want to maintain the stock ride characteristics, you're stuck with the stock mounts - unless we can gang up on Flash and convince him to develop a replica part and offer it at a reasonable price. C'mon Flash you know you want to!

maybe have to think about replacing the 968 for a cayman :-) I'd like to wrench but have limited time available......... If I replace this then have to do some other work as well. thinking about the gasket from the oilpan. But serious, replacing this means perhaps some other problems in the suspension as well? the car is 22 years of age. he Original koni's look fine. no leaks and have tested them two years ago on the testmachine and it was working complete as new as I could see on the diagrams. Bob what is in your opinion the most critical thing to do when I will lower the suspension to inspect the upper strut mounts from the other parts? I already have replaced the rubber mounts of the steering and from the wishbones as well. Are there other parts that could create such a noise?

check the sway bar bushings and the bolts that put them together. ds968 just had a problem with those backing off and making noise.

upper strut mounts can make noise. there is no real way to test that though, without dropping the struts down out of them and checking the bearings. you might be able to tell how worn they are though by looking at the gap between the plate and the rubber. take a pic of the mounts with the car resting on the ground and post it.

you said you already replaced the steering rack, so i assume you also replaced the steering rack bushings.

caster blocks you say are replaced.

control arm bushings are part of the control arm, so unless you changed the control arms, checking those is in order.

other than that:

ball joints can make noise.

the bearing inside the top of the strut housing itself can make a racket. with the car in the air, and the wheels hanging, rock the tire in and out, holding at 12 and 6 o'clock, and feel if the strut shaft is moving in and out or has play.

wheel bearings can make a racket, and should be checked and repacked every couple of years.

Bob, this is the one :the bearing inside the top of the strut housing itself can make a racket.

is my problem of the 968, is squeeks.... terrible when the car is lifted of the ground.

the rest I have replaced (control arm bushings and swaybar and ball joints) in the last couple of years.

Only the steeringrack is not rebuild yet. but there is no need to. no leaks or other strange noises. I replaced the rubber bushings last year

I will give it a look next weekend and see if I can lower the upper strut and look what is wrong..

The U-joint connection on the steering shaft , maybe ? If worn, loose, etc, those have a tendency to "clank" or "clonk " when you turn the steering wheel, but you should hear the sound both with the car under load or in the air..
