vague steering at high speeds
#21

thanks guys i will have a look saturday as she is going off to have some paint work done tomorrow and wont get her back till friday, thanks again for all the help i measured the front and back heights as flash said.

There was definately less height at the back not much, i measured from the gound to the top of the wheel arch

the back was 650mm from the ground and the back was 10-20mm higher not much but maybe this could cause the problem??

should the front be slightly lower i.e the opposite to what i have got??

once again thanks so much

ah ok flash that may explain why a little light at speed do you think too much castor could cause light steering at speed as below 60 steering is fine heavy infact . your thoughts are always appreciated

castor brings the steering back to center and points the car straight - too much can make it feel heavy - too little and it will wander

if it feels light at speed, it is likely a toe thing - some shops like to put in a lot of toe - i like zero, but .1 degree total toe in is ok too - toe out will make it wander, though it will improve turn in - not good on a street car though

Just a quick updat managed to get some time and adjusted rear ride height it was lower at the back by around 3/4 inch having done it car still wanders/light feeling at speed going to try and go for flash's recommended 0 toe or .1 toe in as car is toed out a little.

will let you know later when you chaps have woken up on the other side of the pond

thanks again great forum.

that is in degrees

.1 degrees total toe IN not out

what tires are on the car? different tread patterns and compounds act differently (for example, Bridgestone S0-3s tramline like nuts)

how old are they? the older they are the harder they are, and the more vague they will feel

if you are on the same tires as before, and they had a wear pattern on them, it will take at least 1000 miles to wear in a new pattern on the tires, so it may feel weird until then

but how old? if they are less than 4 years old, i doubt they are the problem

Hi flash

Yes i had a 968cs and a sport a few years back, thats the one thing i loved about the 968 the faster you went the more solid the steering felt almost like there was no power steering.

also flash could it be the steering rack shaft bushes?

The tyres are just 7 months old.

thanks again i will re adjust the toe tomorrow.

I appreciate all the help.

a thought just occurred to me - you have adjustable front struts - you may have the rebound setting too stiff for the springs you have - this is a very common problem, as many people think that cranking up the strut valve makes the suspension stiffer, when in reality it only prevents the spring from doing its job - shocks and struts are only there to dampen the spring, not to make the suspension stiffer

how would this make the front end feel vague? in preventing the spring from moving like it should, which is what cranking up the shocks does, you basically have it jittering all the time, making the front end constantly nervous

as a reference point, on stock springs (M030 are the same final rate as stock), the struts should not be set much more than halfway between full soft and full firm

Thanks flash i have tried to adjust the front struts but to no avail.

The front end is not so much jittery rather floaty. the faster i go the lighter the steering gets almost feeling very light in my hands under 60 mph it feels rock solid.

Thanks for all your help i think tomorrow i will take the pas belt off and see how it feels then.

what is the setting of the struts?

here's how it works on koni yellows (like the M030): the compression setting is fixed - the only adjustment left is rebound - this is the rate that the spring is allowed to return to its extended position - if it is cranked up too much, the spring will not extend correctly, and you could be stuck in a fairly compressed mode, with only the tires and compression stroke working - this is called "jacking down" - this could easily be described as "floating" - it can also create understeer

do NOT remove the power steering belt - this will put too much pressure on your seals and you could easily blow them - once you do, you cannot put the belt back on without resealing the rack

Thanks flash i will not remove the pas belt thanks.

the problemwas there with the old struts so it is not likely its the struts its not wound up the tightest its is in the middle and i have tried all levels still with no luck.

ok - middle is good - they aren't frozen or stuck somehow are they? there should definitely be a difference in bounce, just sitting there, between full soft and full firm (counter-clockwise is to firm)

if you continue to have floating issues after toe set, increase the caster

thanks

running max caster and just cannot figure it out they arent stuck there is a definate difference.

Do you think there is play in the rack or possible track rod ends need changing there is no play but i am now running out of options so prepared to try anything

thanks again

maxxed out? how low are you? there is a point at which the car gets too low and weird things like this happen

as for play, all of that is possible - with the ignition lock released, can you wiggle the steering wheel without any result at the tires?
