Woohoo! After a year and a half in the shop (I told the manager I was in no hurry and he accomodated me) my 968 is back on the road. The ultimate problem turned out to be (his description) a shorted coil in the transmission proper which was shutting down the Tip computer. Apparently it was shorted in such a way as to even prevent diagnostics with the usual computer tools. He found it after a long talk with the Porsche techs and an afternoon with a ohmmeter. Now its time to catch up on all the other little niggling things...

Minor bug from the repair - odometer is inop (but the speedo works) I figure something didn't get hooked back up. A tail light is out, and its time to recover the front zseats - but thats the fun part about having a teenager car...

Check the gear in the odometer, it drives off the speedo so it has to be something in the gears. There are a few threads on here about the odometer gear replacement.

I have a tip also. What were the symptoms for the shorted coil? What kind of shifting problems?

And the repair, it sounds like pull the trans, open it up, and start debug? That would be some $.

My 968 is a 1994 coupe, with lots of miles on it. 170K. The beginning of the failure train was a tranny cooler failure which put peanut butter in the chocolate. A year or so later a bearing failed due to rust; apparently the flushing of the tranny was insufficient. With that replaced it ran okay for another year and then I had a general insurrection on the 60 freeway. The immediate failure might have occurred during that incident, but the symptoms did not really surface until some point during the repairs when other issues had been resolved. At that point the tranny would just go into safe mode and pout on initial startup. It was not hard to reproduce. In the course of debugging two Tip computers were fried, so it was very $$$$$ and time consuming. The control unit and tranny were removed and replaced several times. In retrospect it might have been better to just replace the whole thing. Anyway - its still my favorite car ever.
