timing belt roller size
#1

Does anyone know the timing belt idler roller size. I just bought a new one which is around 37mm and the old one is 46mm. Which one is correct on my 92 968.

It should be 46mm. The part number is 944-105-241-04. BTW you are refering to the black roller next to the upper balance shaft right?

It's the only smooth roller on the timing belt. Directly to the right of the waterpump while facing it. In the the meantime I'm heading over to Brumos to see about.

It sounds like we are talking about the same part. Im not sure how you got one that was that much smaller. Perhaps you got the one for the balance shaft belt by mistake? Do you know that part number of the roller in question?

Well.... just got back from Brumos and there are 2 rollers, one large and one small. My car only has the large roller which is the top and no lower (small) roller. Anyone else have this or does not have this? Is the smaller (bottom) roller required? Very strange!!!!

I have never even heard of there being two rollers on the timing belt. I have never seen a car that has one, and would be interested to know if anyone else has. Having said that, I don't think that it is extremly critical if it was there or not. I do know that the top one makes a difference. Not sure about this bottom one though.

The top roller does put tension on the timing belt. The bottom roller puts slight tension on the timing belt also. Any other input!!!!!!!!

According to the Paragon kit there are two smooth rollers, http://www.paragon-products.com/product_p/968-br.htm

The link I sent shows a timing belt and balance shaft roller. If you click on the pictures in the link if shows a diagram.

As I recall, there are two rollers, one large silver, and one smaller black. The larger one is for the timing belt, the smaller for the balance belt on the bottom side of the belt (center of belt) between the two balance shafts. The balance shaft roller is VERY important. There is quite a bit of slack when it is properly tensioned, and that smacks around with sudden changes in throttle. This roller keeps it under control.

This is true, but I think kwikt is saying that there are supposed to to two rollers for the timing belt, and another (the silver one) for the balance belt. The kit from Paragon is a timing belt and balance belt kit. The picture shows the silver one for the balance belt and the black one for the timing belt. I think that you might have recieved the wrong pulley by accident. I have never seen a 968 with two idler pulleys on the timing belt.

It is the timing belt rollers. Already replaced the c/b roller. After looking at it again, the black large roller goes on top. The small steel roller "should" go below it and it rests against the timing belt. It even has a mounting point for the small roller and I believe it's threaded. I'll check it out this weekend. Like I said.... it does show it in the parts diagram. I need to get you guys a pic of this mystery.

i know some kits come with an extra roller that is not used on the 968 - there is a hole where it would be, but it is not used

i think a lot of those kits had the narrower belt from the 944 though, so better check that
