The only thing more than driving my 968

[quote name='ds968' timestamp='1414677813' post='163324']Chris may indeed have been an extraordinary and courageous pilot, but surely when looking at these photos even he would be humbled by the fierce uber-pilot pictured here. Besides, I bet Chris never had a magnificent headrest cover like that one in his plane.

A friend sent me this “story” , had to share  ( now that I’m getting older and luxury / creature comfort cars no longer seem lame..)

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">An Airbus 380 is on its way across the Atlantic.  It flies consistently at 800 km/h in 30,000 feet, when suddenly a Eurofighter with Tempo Mach 2 appears.

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">The pilot of the fighter jet slows down, flies alongside the Airbus and greets the pilot of the passenger plane by radio: "Airbus flight, boring flight isn’t it?  Take care and have a look here!”

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">He rolls his jet on its back, accelerates, breaks through the sound barrier, rises rapidly to a dizzying height, only to swoop down almost to sea level in a breath-taking dive.  He loops back next to the Airbus and asks "Well, how was that?"

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">The Airbus pilot answers: "Very impressive, but  as an old fighter pilot myself , take a look what I can do !"

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">The jet pilot watches the Airbus, but nothing happens.  It continues to fly stubbornly straight, with the same speed.  After five minutes, the Airbus pilot radioed "Well, what are you saying now?"

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">The jet pilot asks confused: "What did you do?"  The other laughs and says "I got up, stretched my legs, went to the back of the craft to the bathroom, got a cup of coffee and a cinnamon cake.  Can you do that now ?!

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">Remember this :

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">When you are young, speed and adrenaline seems to be great.  But as you get older and wiser, comfort and peace are not to be despised either.

<p style="font-family:'-apple-system', BlinkMacSystemFont, 'Helvetica Neue', 'Segoe UI', Arial, sans-serif;font-size:13px;color:rgb(118,118,118);">This is called S.O.S.: Slower, Older, Smarter.

Yup, sure beats trying to pee into a relief tube while sitting the cockpit.

I love that story, Dan. Kind of feel like you posted that just for me - I definitely identify with "S.O.S."

I'm in the process of selling my 968, which has been a bit of an emotional journey. We moved out of close-in Portland earlier this year and decamped to the distant suburbs. That combined with my kids finally starting school (the oldest was supposed to begin kindergarten last fall) has sort of crystallized my priorities. The 968 has been my daily driver (we do have backup cars) but now I need to do most of my phone calls during my 35 minute commute. I've had multiple comments during those calls about road noise  Big Grin. "There's a lot of background noise, how fast are you driving?" I added some dynamat and sealed up the rear speaker chambers (thanks Flash) a couple weeks ago but, you all know. There are limits and I'm not going to be able to make the 968 into a late model Merc.

Double clutching to 5500 in second is less thrilling when you're on a conference call. And, the kids are both riding bikes now and it would be great to get all the cars into the garage so we have more driveway space. Our Town & Country has to park in the driveway. That van has - and I am not joking - a bullet hole in the bumper (did I mention that I lived in the war zone of close-in PDX?). We're next to the golf course clubhouse. The neighbors whisper. It's awkward.

The 968 is not for conference calls but for driving. I’d make up a great story about the bullet hole. Age and changing circumstances eventually impact all of us. I used to have all of my cars in their respective garages. Now they are all outside. While I don’t like it I’ve adapted. You might regret giving up the 968 later on. Many do. Or perhaps at the right time you will find something else that excites you. Regardless you will make the right call!
