Currently visiting home on Maui and a new rental company started here renting '58 Speedster replicas. I was curious so I decided to rent one for a day and I'm very impressed! These are based on VW bug chassis (not tube frame like some of the higher end replicas) but the car was a blast. So much fun to drive! might have gotten the bug to get one of these myself but surprised at how expensive they are.
Attached are some photos of the drive around the island.

JTP,
That's too cool. That car must have amazing grip! What engine is in the car you drove?
Hawaii is on my list of places to go someday. Thanks for sharing those pics.

I'm not sure how some of these photos uploaded upside down or sideways, I'll try to fix them when I get to my laptop.
I ended up driving two of their cars, both silver with a 1600cc VW flat four mated to a four speed. The first one felt really twitchy at speed and later the steering wheel began to get really loose. I called them and they immediately delivered me a different car. The second one was well sorted, handled much better and engine was much more powerful. I drove up to about 8,000' elevation up Haleakala then around the north side of the island. Maui has some really twisty roads and the car handled great. It was so much fun with the top down and the tiny windscreen, I'm not a big fan of cabrios but this car was a different experience. My face was sore from grinning the entire day! When I lived here I had three 914s and they were fun but this Speedster was more much fun to drive.
If anyone comes to Maui and wants to take one of these cars out the place is Maui Roadsters in Kihei. Frank and Devin were great guys to deal with.
