almost drove out with the wrong car
#1

Leaving the office parking lot today for one of of other buildings, I almost got into the car next to mine.

An honest mistake, because the two cars are so much alike, anyone could confuse them, but as luck would have it, I noticed at the last moment that it was a convertible and since I would never drive one of those I quickly came to my senses and got in the right vehicle. Nedless to say the owner of the DB9, might have taken the 968 by mistake had he left before me, and then what ..?! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Dan... get over yourself! LOL

Great to see that there are some tasteful cars in the parking lot. I am always surprised at how many people are happy with "plain & simple". But if that were not so, then the "out of the ordinary" would not be so...

Darn it, I just missed a great photo opportunity today when my boss's new Maserati GT was parked next to my car and sandwiched on the other side by the DB9 , which is usually parked in that third spot. But he left earlier and by the time I got out of the building there were only two exotic cars left there instead of all three. Ahem . It is important to note that I always have THE choice spot which closest to the entrance ( no handicap jokes please ) whereas our CFO ( my boss ) and our CEO ( his boss ) know that since their cars are in a league far below the 968, must bow with great humility and show the 968 tne proper proper pity.. errr..I meant , show the 968 proper respect it deserves. :-) :-) by ceding the top VIP space to me. And this is just my beat up daily driver, heck when I drive the blue six speed to work I expect them to leven eave an empty space between us , lol.

As is right and due! Do they know this or did you communicate it to them in your inimitable way?

They're car aficionados so they know the order of things in this world when it comes to 968s :-). Kidding aside though, they both appreciate the merits of the 968 and always talk about it with high regard. I drove both of their cars and my boss drove my DD. He almost lost it in a turn because he stepped on the gas a little too much , a little too early. His GT cannot do that even in sport mode. Amazing what a supercharger can do to our cars. Not to mention that my six speed is so much faster, it can simply walk away from the tip. So I'm not letting him drive that one, even of he begs, boss, or not. The CEO also has a 04 or 05 Vanquish but he does not drive that to work all that often ..maybe once a month. I have not driven that car though I imagine it's not only fast, it probably feels fast too ! Not the case with either the Maserati or the DB9 , I absolutely love the looks of both, and would sell my sister into slavery ( if I had one..) for the sound of the exhaust on either of them but quite honestly I was underwhelmed by how they feel driving.. Newer cars lack any soul, any feedback, just plain dull..IMHO. On a related note : our chairman of the board whose net worth is approx $ 300 Mil. , and who is 78 years young :-) , drives a 993 !! That's his daily driver, no idea what else he has but everyone keeps telling him that he should get some super duper comfortable but crazy fast new car like a Bentley continental GT R, or a Bugatti Veyron , hell, he can afford a fleet of those, instead of having his bones rattled and shaken and whatnot by a primitive car , but he always responds the same way : the 993 is a classic , he loves air cooled Porsches and it's a true driver's car with spirit which none of the newer cars can match, so he's taking that one along to his grave .. Gotta respect that kind of " soul " .

The soul is the deal. Feeling the road and your car communicating to you is unlike just about anything else. Listening to your butt talk to you and let you know you're about to break is one of the coolest feelings imaginable. I can remember the first time it happened to me. The light bulb went off and it was like oh yea. You don't get that with all the fancy doodads today!

while i can agree about the sensations, i have to disagree about this being the car to best provide them.  this is not a car that was designed for, nor particularly capable of, being driven truly fast.  sure, you can compromise and drive one on the track, but it's a touring car, and great at that.  that's what i like about it.  great for "spirited" drives, but if you really want all of that sensation, and you really want to drive fast, you have to do it on the track, not on public roads, and this car is too big, heavy, and slow.  even the lowest class of formula car is much better suited to the task, and will provide much more sensation, feedback, and communication to the driver.

that's why the "new fangled stuff" is being added to my car.  it brings it up to the level of today's car, for the use for which it was designed, and more completely provides for the experience and sensation it was intended to provide.

you wouldn't bring a set of golf clubs to play baseball.

I feel compelled to take issue. Things are relative. True, compared to a Formula race car, our 968s are relatively slow and tame. Of course, that race car is relatively slow and tame compared to a superbike, which is slow and tame compared to a land speed record rocket car, which is slow and tame compared to a fighter jet, which is slow and tame comparded to a spacecraft, etc.

But compared to most cars people actually drive on regular streets and highways, the 968 presents a more fun, better handling, and faster than most experience. It certainly beats both my Highlander (duh), and my '58 TR3A (a true "sports car").

following that line of thinking, i would take my old mgb any day over the 968.  it provided better driver feedback, more sensation, was every bit as fast as a stock 968, and was a much better handling and cornering car.

it wasn't big on carrying golf clubs or luggage though.

i'm not saying the 968 isn't fun.  i'm not even saying that you can't have fun with it on the track.  i'm just saying that it wasn't designed for that, and there are better cars for that.

following the golf club metaphor, it would be like choosing your 5 wood to try to hit a 275 yard drive, when you have your driver in the bag.  sure, you can get most of it, and have a lot of the same feel and such, but it will fall short, and for no reason other than your poor decision.
