Hello,

Finally getting around to building my 968 engine to put into my 87 944S since the head just broke on my S engine...

Engine had 155,000 miles and is completely apart for rebuild.

What is the consensus on timing belt tensioners? Should I reuse or replace? Should timing chain be replaced as well?

Cylinders are already honed, head is rebuilt. All crank and piston dimensions were in spec, so getting reused. All new seals and bearings though.

at that mileage, i think i would replace the tensioner. it isn't expensive, relative to having to go back in there.



definitely replace the chain and variocam pads with fresh ones.

Definitely replace the tensioner. A lot of the other parts in the timing belt system might warn you if they are in need of replacement. The tensioner will not, and if it goes you'll wish you'd spent the $'s for it rather than the mega $'s it will cost if the belt fails. It's cheap insurance.

yup - conti are like rubber bands. most good mechanics refuse to use them.

You can get the pads from Zims AUtotechnic as well, not sure how the price compares with Sunset.

Ok, another question. What's with the difference in balance shaft seals between 944s and 968s? One site says Porsche changed them some how so they cost more…?
