Compressing the tensioner
#1

I'm having some trouble compressing the tensioner. I have it in a vice (bun on the back protected by using a large nut). I can compress it all the way until there is about 3/16" to go and then it gets rock hard. Is this normal? If I continue to squeeze it on the vice will it damage anything?

From reading the previous post about tensioners I saw a comment about them being hard to compress so I'm thinking that's what I am experiencing. Also I see that if I break it there is an available unit from RockAuto :-)

Thx

tim

Compress it until you can put a pin (i.e. small nail) in to hold it fully compressed. And yes, Rock Auto had them available last month in case yours needs to be replaced...

I may be mixed up here, but I thought the tensioner was no longer available --anywhere. Am I thinking of the correct part.

Yes. A URO replacement recently became available again through Rock Auto. (Probably everywhere that sells URO, but definitely RA.)

Take a look in the manual, compressing the tensioner is fully covered in there

I have the manual - it's just a question of how hard do I have to crank down on the vice? It closes fairly easily until I get near the end and then it doesn't want to go any more...

OK crisis over. The problem was with my vice. It seems to get stuck right at that point. Used another vice and no problem. Tensioner installed.

Cheers!

I love a happy ending!

Hey Tim, do you ever run into Jack and Ernie at any car events down there? Jack is from Roswell and used to own Dean Jeffries’ Custom Carrera GT. He drives a beautiful orange MX-5 now, and IIRC Ernie has some high-fallutin GT-4 or some other special Cayman.

I know Jack from another forum.
