Tail lights and the missing bulb.
#1

This is something I've been thinking about tackling for awhile. In my rear light assembly the section facing the center of the car does not have a bulb and the wiring harness does not have a fitting for a bulb there. Its capped off in fact. I'd like to splice in another socket for either a regular bulb or brake light. I wonder if the European version is the same. Anyone know where one might acquire another socket without having to purchase the tail light harness and if I do have to go that route is there a harness which has it included....

It is the location for the rear fog light used in ROW cars. You can get switch, harness and tail lights for ROW cars through Porsche or make up your own.  The part number are on PET.

Mine's got a red lens, I don't think its for rear fog at least not on the U.S. version.  I have seen harnesses with 6 sockets, mine's got 4. I may just buy a 4 and use two of them but won't be able to put in brake lights which I thought might look kinda cool, corner square lit and end square lit with one in the middle standard intensity.

Rest Of ( the ) World . Because with us , the US-centric maniacs that we are, anything and everything outside of our borders is all blended inside a " the rest " category... :-) :-)

Back in college days when I was 20 yrs. old my first car was a MGBGT which I had set up for rallying. I had 4 extra white light lens flame throwers and 2 yellow fog lights in front. In the back II had 2 white lights and 2 yellow fog lights for backing up. It was like driving during the day they were so bright. But US cars do not have fog lights in the rear. We do however have very small white lens lights as a backup light, which do hardly anything and only work in reverse gear..

We got the reverse lights, but you ain't got no rear fog lights? Then how are you supposed too see others in heavy fog? Over here the fog lights have the same intensity as brake lights do so you can spot other cars much faster in bad conditions. We are also allowed to use them in very heavy rain, especially on the freeway, when additional spray from cars and trucks limits visibility even more.

Rules have changed a lot since the 90s, was not something required here in the USA, and still not as far as I know.  And I lived in Belgium, remember having to get my import cars retrofitted for rear fogs as at the time, they were required by law.  I have not lived in all the places in the world, but on the north east side of Brussels where I lived, fog would get pretty dense on the ring.  Not around where I live now or places in the past.  People only turn them on to be cool around here it seems and don't realize how blinding they are in the rear when they turn those on like dumbasses too, brighter than brake lights.  Fogs do NOT equal driving lights.  I thought I remembered people getting pulled over for driving with rear fogs on in Belgium, if there was no fog.

As the world homologates for cost saving measures, a lot of things are just standard now to avoid unique parts for each market.

I know in countries such as England and Australia, cars cost a lot more because of the extra parts and time needed just for the cars on the other side of the road.

It is indeed illegal to put them on when there is no fog or low visibility due to rain.

Waylander, deep down inside you just know you got it wrong, lol.

driving their old convertible sports cars top down on the left side of the road is why brits have such bad teeth.  it may be a sure fire route to permagrin, but a tree branch in the kisser will fund your dentist's vacation.

back on topic, while the lens may appear red, if a bulb is put in there, does it change color, just like the turn signal and back up light?

It should stay red, if it's meant for fog lights.

My SAAB 9-3 has the rear fog light (on the Driver side only). It is RED and as mentioned in another post, it looks like you have your left brake light on. Makes sense in heavy fog or rain situations which we have in this area...

Fog lights are amber not red. I noticed a fuse for the rear fog lights and wondered about that. The front "fog" lights are misnamed as well; as issued they're driving lights, replace the bulb with a halogen fog lamp and they work as advertised. The front "fog" lights project, the rear do not.

Here is a quote from a website that describes the "Rear Fog light":

A rear fog lamp is a red light, about as bright as a brake lamp, manually switched on by the driver in conditions of very poor visibility (heavy fog, rain, snow) to increase your car's visibility to vehicles behind. A rear fog lamp is very much brighter than regular taillights, and the light is usually concentrated in a tighter beam to "punch" through fog, rain or snow.

I am not aware of any "fog" light that fits that description on my car. Is there a special button or position to turn them on so I can check?
