You don't agree? Very funny, the light that operates as an auxiliary high beam is also the "flasher" light.

All I'm saying is that the flashing lights are not really an aditional pair of high beams. They are just for flashing. Maybe that is why they are allowed as Flash said.

fog lights are designed to be pointed down and to the sides much more than the low beams, to enhance the reduced peripheral vision of the human eye under low light conditions, and to pick up the lines in the road.  they are not intended to "cut through" the fog or illuminate directly ahead of the car.

 

driving lights are intended to supplement high beams only, and are designed to widen the field of light.

and don't do what I did when installing new ones, which was mounting them upside down ( a very easy thing to do since they fit perfectly either way and not particularly a very noticeable mistake until you turn the lights on ..) which causes them to act pretty much as search lights for UFOs ..

Back in the late 60"s when I had my MGBGT set up as a rally car, with both clear lens Lucas Brand Flame throwers in the Front and yellow Fog lights in the Front, I also had 1  Fog light and 1 clear fog lamp in the rear. I did not aim them to point down, but straight ahead. I went to school in Rochester NY where it snows quite a bit. The advantage of the yellow fog light was that the light penetrated the snow and I could see where I was driving. I had all those extra lights on a completely separate switch so I could have the normal headlights on or off. Driving in a snow storm with normal headlights of the flame throwers  on did not work as the light would reflect of the snow and blind me. But the yellow lens fog lamps did not.


 

In todays cars with clear fog lamps which work only when low beams are on I agree with Flashes comment that they are aimed down to illuminate just in front of the vehicle, not down the road. I put  PIAA"s higher Kelvin lamps which do little to improve the fog lamps but did help on the regular beams of lights.

When you put the high beams on, the lights that you use for "flashing" become the high beam auxiliary lights.  They do not flash.   It is not an option on my car, they come on with the high beams. The purpose of the "flashers" in Germany, and used particularly on the Autobahn, are to signal the driver ahead of you that you are coming up fast and to please move over, in brisk German fashion.  They also use them as a greeting to fellow Porsche owners. Which I've seen occasionally here.  

 

The real reason Germans (and other's have followed suit as a result) adopted higher intensity lights is that they drive their cars faster and need better illumination with longer range as a result.

And per that last comment regarding the "fog" lights, its really kind of a waste to buy the amber ones unless you just like the look. (Which I do, but sacrifice the improved road visibility of the clear ones.)

My god.  Can you believe that in the 9 years I own the car now, I never noticed that the flashers are permanently lid together with the high beams?  One learns something new every day,  Icon_lol1

All too true :-)


Btw: I noticed a small amound of oil on my garage floor underneath the transmission. The bastardo clearly needs a new seal or whatever is in there. It is coming out a tiny hole on the underside. Maybe I should weld it shut and forget about it? Sigh...

BTW as regards the missing bulb... it seems that its intentional. If you install a bulb you don't conform with code. 

 

LACK OF REAR REFLECTORS: Two red reflectors are required on the rear of cars and trucks (24607 VC).

And technically that empty pod is not really a reflector as it does not really reflect anything. The 968 is out of code, and that's a federal statute.

Is the trans overfilled? I understand that they are sensitive to that.

Good idea, thanks. I'm having difficulties to understand how you can overfill it because you have to fill it up untill it overflows?

In any case: I will check if anything comes out when unscrewing the filler plug. Is the little hole an overflow?

I don't know, but mine was dripping a random drop here and there when I first bought it. After I changed the fluid out it stopped, so maybe there is an overflow hole.

 

FYI, the plugs on mine were insanely tight, which I understand is normal. Take off the left rear wheel and use a long extension to access the filler plug. I had to use a heat gun around the plug to get it to break loose. Buy a new plug and gasket before you start the process since you will probably ruin the old one, and DON'T drain the fluid before you loosen the filler plug. Did that, and almost had to have the car towed to a shop to get the filler plug out.

 

Amsoil makes a fluid that satisfies all the specs. A bit pricy but I understand it's good stuff.

Thanks for the advice, but I changed the oil twice since I own the car. The last time was about a year ago. No Amsoil here (they don't sell it over here as far as I know), but I use the viscosity Porsche recommends. Maybe I just put in a little too much. Let's hope She shows me some mercy :-)
