Az, good point! Of course her sister wanted the other one also. She may change her mind when she sees what I've done to it but!! No the sc isn't a slippery slope. Getting into tracking your car is though! The coolest thing was she wanted pics of her and the car so she could Instagram them and make her friends jealous. Imagine wanting to hang with your gramps and go for long drives with him. Another point for ownership of the 968!

Just had my granddaughters here, both still fit in the backseat of my 968 for drives.  Nothing better! They are acquiring a need for speed! So maybe the SC will count as a gift for them and come out of the "granddaughter spoiling budget" rather than my "wasteful spending budget". Woo hoo!

It's all in the telling...for example, my differential was open...open is bad, things might fall out, therefore, it needed to be changed to something safer like a locking differential. You see, just trying to keep the car in one piece, as it IS a rapidly increasing asset Smile

Yo, SCF ! - has anyone changed their drive belts yet ? If you had it done at a shop, how many hours of labor were you charged ? Or, if you did the job yourself, how much of the SC assembly did you have to remove in order to have plenty of room to do the job right ?


I know the " you should only need to ... " version, but I'm interested in the " real life experience " version , which as we all know, with 20 year old cars where everything has shifted or is frozen in place, and particularly as crammed as everything is now on the 968, nothing ever works as smoothly and as easily as it theoretically should ..

Also wondering if under the force of a SC the belts wear & tear factor is materially affected ? Would 30k miles with an SC be the equivalent of 35k..or 40k ( assuming same driving habits of course ) on those belts ? Anyway, more interested on the actual job itself in the previous post, but that led me to think about the interval with SCs..

it's still too early to tell, but logic would dictate that a street car with an SC would extend the belt life, as it is not generally revved as high, due to the increased low end torque, eliminating the need for high revs to achieve power, thereby lowering the friction on the belts, and thus decreasing the cross-linking of the polymers, which would help maintain its elasticity, and thereby increase life.

Hmm, that's interesting . I would have thought there is a greater stress to which the belt is subjected to when you accelerate with so much more torque coming in right away, as opposed to a more gradual spin with the normal torque curve ..

just for clarification, my response is related to the timing and balance belts.

 

it really depends on the rpm.  if you are in the tip, for example, and stomp on it, it downshifts 2 gears, and suddenly revs to 5500, that puts more "snap" stress on the belts than spinning it up to 6k in a manual.

 

i haven't done any real testing, and it's way too early to tell, but so far, there is no indication that the SC adds any wear and tear on the belts.

 

the serpentine belt may see more wear, depending on whether or not it was over-tensioned (which happens way too often for my liking)

on a street car, it's easier on the engine overall.  lower revving results in less wear.

 

helps prevent the urge to run out and buy a new car (worked for me for 11 years)

Calling all D1R SC owners ; with Flash's pending departure from the U.S. , the ensuing drop from his usual and customary participation in the forum , not to mention the closure of D1R business and further compounded by a realistic possibility this site might not find new ownership committed to keep it viable / active , I think it''s time to revive the SC faction and set up a " support group " so we can continue addressing SC related matters going forward . Perhaps a group email would be the easiest way to communicate but if anyone thinks of a better solution please advise. I'm also technology-challenged so one of you guys knows how to and can easily set up group emails ( I sure there must be a science to it, other than simply adding name after name to an email until done , and then in the furtive using the reply to all for all further continuations ..isn't there ? ) let us know and we'll send you a PM with our respective contact info.

I am such a busy person these days.  If no one else is willing to stand up and lead, I can help set this up.  If someone else is willing to lead, I can be the person that assists.  There are tons of options if you want to start a "club" and pay.  But I think for free is the best way to start now.

 

I am more than willing to throw up a simple hosting site and pay out of pocket for a year or two, but without Bob's blessing, I will not host any of his supercharger kit literature.

 

I was interested in taking on this site as a business partner, but have not heard back.
