Sun Roof repair
#21

Thanks; I'll look at Clark's Garage again. My recollection was that it wasn't terribly helpful for my problem, but maybe I wasn't looking in the right place. I don't remember seeing a tab called "meet the microswitches," so maybe I was somehow in the wrong place. I definitely need some guidance on this, because reading through the earlier posts on this thread just got me cross-eyed, kind of the way I feel after reading Flash describe the art of balancing a car stereo system .

go to clarks and do a search. keyword "sunroof"
look at Option 1 and 2.

1. Sunroof Operation, Troubleshooting, and Repair - shop-manual/body-03.htm - matched title
2 should be 2. Sunroof Component Testing - shop-manual/elect-18.htm - matched title

Looking at the trouble shoot guide, your symptom seems to be #4 on therir list. It reads - "Sunroof will raise to the open position but will not lower to the locked position." It has you check the console switch.

I will say this. Until I got in there and pulled things apart I didn't understand what they were talking about. There's a lot of little pieces in odd places that effect the roof. Waaaaay more complex then it had to be. Seems the most common problems is the switch and stripped gears.

I love my 968 for what it is & don't hate it for what it isn't!

For reference, here is a link to an article that guided me through the process of diagnosing and fixing my sunroof issues.
It uses the words "limit switches" about 150 times.
It's a really useful write-up IMO.

Thanks, guys. This is very helpful. Yes, it seems that the sunroof drive mechanism is a lot more complicated than it ought to be, but I suppose that once you're up to your elbows in it, it should start to make sense.

ARE YOU KIDDING ME!!!!!!!!!

I fought with my sunroof after I first got the car, but to no avail. I got it into the lock position and left alone. I searched all over this site and read everything, even post on this thread even. Cloud9...68's post was soon after I had to step back from life and the 968 due to medical issues. Did a search tonight and found this little gem about adjustment screws. Aparently I was very close last year as all I did was make the adjustments and bingo, damn thing works. I have replaced all plastic parts including gear tray, new gears and the plastic cap.

Lotsa luck. After literally months of fiddling, testing, and replacing parts, I never could get it to work. Now I just leave it off most of the time.

I pulled mine all apart a few months ago and found that only one of the microswitches was making contact. This was allowing the drive chain to "keep closing" when you held down the button which in turn grinds the gear teeth right off! I bent both of the microswitches back up so that they made proper contact, and voila! It all works now. Just need to make sure that the drive chain is in the right place when you go to reassemble, and that the ratcheting teeth are in the proper position.

My system is possessed. When I last tested it (before I started taking the car apart), it would do things like run backwards(!) - by that I mean that sometimes is would unlock when I pushed the console switch to the lock position (after first trying the unlock direction, of course), but the next time would try it, it would work in the correct direction, but never for very long. Other times, I would have to first move the usnroof to the silly vent position before I could get it to either lock or unlock - I never knew a sunroof mechanism needed to "warm up" before it would decide to work <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> .

I went through Clark's Garage's excellent troubleshooting procedure from beginning to end, testing every single relay (by applying 9V to the proper connectors to confirm they were closing correctly) and switch, I replaced both sets of gears (they were stripped, of course), and I played endlessly with the microswitches. If I can find one, I think I'm going to install a super-lightweight fiberglass or carbon fiber replacement for this piece of junk, and rig up some fasteners to allow easy manual removal and installation. Then I'll do my best imitation of that scene in "Office Space" in which Michael Bolton pummels the printer that was causing him so much grief and rip the entire wretched drive mechanism out of my car, and set it on fire. There, I feel better now...

@ Andy My favorite scene in Office Space! Second favorite is the opening scene in the traffic jam.

I would keep the old panel so you can flip if over and tie a rope to it. Then you can have the Mrs. pull you around behind the BMW for a hill country version of sledding.

Great suggestion, Rob. To make my sunroof "adventure" complete, I ignored Flash's wise advice to secure the help of an assistant when installing the D1R roll bar, and in the process of grappling with it, I managed to pop the left rear corner of the sunroof out of position, so there it sits, with this corner sticking up a good half inch above the roofline. I wasn't smart enough to think of removing it before I started. So, who knows what type of damage I may have done to the mechanism. On the other hand, maybe doing whatever I need to do to get it jammed back into position will finally fix the darn thing!
