strut bearings wear
#1

Trying to find out how far above the rubber "puck" surface of the strut towers bearing your round metal rings ( or plates if that's what they're called ) are ? At the biggest separation point mine are 5/16 " - 8mm - from the top of the rubber surface to the bottom edge of the metal plate/ring above it. The gap is equal on both struts..maybe 1 mm difference at the most. They also tilt slightly toward the inside, so I think the inner distance is just a bit less, looks like a couple of mms, but if you guys can measure just the outside gap ( unless your plate sits retty much sealed to the rubber surface , in whic case it would be good to know as well.. ) and post that distance that would be great..

post a pic of the gap you are looking for and I'll be happy to measure.

Great, thanks Johann, and much better photo than the one I posted so that should help .. one of my local friends' ( 968-er ) space is about 8mm.. may be this is fairly normal after a certain amount of miles

So would it be reasonable to conclude based on just a couple of replies that it's perfectly normal to have this spacing , this being the case in the majority of our cars out there ? Some 60 + folks saw this thread so I'm guessing the gap was about the same in their cars whether measured, or just a visual check, otherwise someone would have posted a " no, mine is perfectly planted right on the rubber surface, no gap at all " comment

I say it's designed that way. I've been upgrading the suspension on a new car and it has the same gap.

Yeah, mine are about the same 8 - 9 mm. That is with over 180,000 miles on "ol blue". Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
