Strange oil filter question
#1

So I've been tracking my 968 and twice the oil filter has come loose on me. The first time it happened I didn't catch it quickly enough and all the oil got dumped in pit lane. The second time it happened, I caught it in time and tightened it back up again. I hand tightened it the first time and a mechanic I use hand tightened it the second time. We aren't weightlifters, but we are strong enough to know when a filter is on tight (or so we thought.) Also, I've been told that these filters should only be hand tightened, but for all my other vehicles, I hand tighten and then use an oil wrench to go another 1/4-1/2 turn and have never had a problem like this in 25 years. The filter screws on just fine and the threads appear to be in good shape as does the base of the filter housing.

Any thoughts on why it might be coming loose (only happens at the track BTW, but it's also not driven much on the street).

Thanks

I have seen this on other cars. One trick is to find a strip of metal & a couple of hose clamps. Find a location where the strip of metal can contact something solid. use the clamps to secure it to the filter. Kind of like safety wire.

Check your balance shaft belt & make sure it is in time. We had problems with incorrect markings on the gears & several things came loose on the engine.

Check the rubber 0-ring at the base of the filter. It may be either:
- cracked,
- missing, or
- in some cases, the o-ring from the last filter change got stuck and was not removed leaving 2-rings.

I've done that double o-ring thing before. My experience was that the seal was no good from the start and as soon as the system was pressurized blamo - the oil was all over everything.

were these the last 2 oils changes only? Meaning this is a new reoccurring problem. What brand of filter is it?

Try a K&N filters. They are screwed on and off by socket and the element is constructed better then the typical filters. Ideal for those that go over 5 months between changes. They also have a double seal.

Convert to Canton and never have that problem again? Or the mess

What is Canton?

these were the first two oil changes I had done since I've had the car. First change used a Porsche filter, second generic. Didn't have double o-ring on it and seal on both filters was good. I'm going to hand tighten and then turn 1/4 more with a wrench and see how that goes.
