Steering Universal Joint Shaft - How Much Play?

Sorry, I forgot to mention that in the excitement over my 'new' steering!



There's absolutely no play at all at the steering wheel now. When it was still installed in the car, I could wiggle the old shaft by hand with obvious play at both joints (the lower joint turned out to be as bad as the upper joint), but the new one is rock solid. Interestingly though, the joints on the old shaft didn't feel as bad as I expected them to once we had the shaft out of the car. If it had been supplied as a used part, you'd almost say it was OK. From the driver's seat it's like a completely different car, so much more direct than before. It was superior to my other cars before the job, but now I can see just how much better it really is!

the universal joints are easily replaced you need to find a supplier of Bailey Morris BM240 they are easy to press out and then press back in and re-stake.

 

the joints cost over here £12 each so that's about 20 dollars a joint.

 

this is my shaft I have redone

Mine is due for new joints too. Quite a lot of play. Provided I can locate new joints, how can I get them out and the new ones in? And what is 're-staking'?

The joints are held by the six little bits that are basically pressed into the ends, this is what holds the end caps in place instead of circlips


You can see those in the pictures


You need a vice and some sockets to push out the old UJ's and press in the new ones, if you have never done one before you might find it a bit hard


If you can find a worn out one and send it to me I'm sure I can help you out

I will go to a local shop and ask for the joints. If you can do the job with just a vise and sockets I'll give it a go. I replaced the bearings on my clutch lever thing the same way.


Any tips are more than welcome though :-)

The biggest tip is make sure you mark all the parts before disassembly, the ends of the shaft are offset and if you put it back together wrong your steering wheel will be 180 degrees out! 

 

take your time and work slowly, and when the joints are back in use a blunt chisel or punch to redo the stakes.

 

If you cant source the joints where you are let me know and I will put you in touch with the bearing shop I used to by them,

you can download the catalogue from the website, that will give you the dimensions of the joint

 

the same joint is used in Volvo and BMW steering shafts
