Speaker recommendations ?
#21

Yeah,

The rear 4" Nokia's do have quite a large magnet on them, so they probably are best to live with over any other aftermarket speaker!

What about the tweeters though, would it be better to pop them out and replace them with an aftermarket 3/4" or 1" soft dome silk tweeter? (especially since I have already replaced the front tweeters with 1" soft dome silk tweeters along with changing out the 5" Nokia's to 5 1/4" Audiobahn's). The stock Nokia tweeters are mylar types, which don't appear to be of all that great a quality, so I would think that upgrading them to soft dome types would be an improvement along with using a crossover that is sold with the component sets that they come with.

What do you think?

i would initially say yes, but the fit is an issue - also getting wires in and out and keeping the box sealed might pose a problem - it took quite a bit of trimming and dynamat extreme to get the boxes sounding right

the tweeters sound pretty danged good as is in my car, but then i have a pretty serious eq and tuning section on my deck

i think that one will come down to personal preference, and your skill with the dremel

I had to use the Dremel to get the Audiobahn tweeters to fit in the Porsche covers for the fronts, and they fit perfectly after my modifications. The rear ones will be way easier to fit since the stock tweeters are screwed & glued onto the cover plate which should make it easier to remove (after unscrewing the retaining screws I suspect that it will be easy to break the old tweeters off and then just mount the new soft dome tweeters in the same place...might have to open the hole up a bit, but no big deal).

Getting the wires in & out air tight is very simple...I just use the original rubber seal with the stock wires that already run thru it but eliminate the internal amp and then connect the wires that were going to the amp circuit board to each speaker instead. I will even still use the orginal factor wire connector to the speaker enclosure in the process!

remember: magnet size does not imply response or excursion. With today's new magnet compositions, small magnets can make big sounds (cell phones for ex) In the past, bigger was better. If you can, listen to a friend's system or go to a hig end stereo store and demo everything. Then find a cheaper knockoff offering the same quality..

For the best speakers, look for some variation of rubber surround (not foam), cast alloy basket (not plastic or pressed steel), kapton or better voice coil design, avoid coaxial systems and buy component systems (allows better tuning with crossover), and speaker material of some type of composite plastic/ glass -resin (not variations of paper)

I would suggest min of 5 in diameter speaker for lower door and, I think I posted this somewhere else, silk tweeters offer a better sound quality than metal.

passive crossovers are fine if the are made of quality components and have a good design. Look for adjustable crossover to help match your system.

Original wiring(in my car) has a capacitor for the tweet behind the lower plastic door panel. Don't wire up these and a new crossover by accident.

Just my .02 dollar....
