Sound pipe (centre muffler)
#1

Hi,

I am a new member of this forum and I have to say it has been a great help to me! (airbox, chips), thanx !

At the moment I am looking at a sound pipe for my 968 conv. This sound pipe replaces the centre muffler (after the cat) my main goal is to get a better sound out of my car, any power gains are a bonus....my question is how will this sounpipe affect the performance? has anyone tried this before? It bolts directly to all the original flanges etc. so no hassle with the fittings

Thank you in advance,

Rutger

As Pete at RS Barn can tell you, the exhaust system of our 968's is rather unique, in that opening them up does not result in more, but often less, power.

Your car may SOUND faster, but the stopwatch will tell you differently.

I personally have never heard of a Sound Pipe, with bolt up fittings. Who makes it and where is it sold??? Is it basically a Cherry Bomb type muffler of days or yore?

Spoke with Wes over at Lindsey about a future exhaust for my car. As he puts it, the pressure on the exhaust stroke of the valve can be reduced with their exhaust in place giving you a better breathing machine. This will not add HP but will run through your RPMs faster.

I too am new, lot's of great help here!

Sort of on topic - I was thinking about the ProMAX cat replacement to kick up the HP a bit but can't quite get past the price tag - about $600 delivered. Any thoughts on that or on a less costly alternative to losing that restrictive catalytic, albiet temporarily (have to put it back on for one day every two years to pass Aircare here in beautiful British Columbia).

welcome welcome

exhaust is one of the first places people tend to look when thinking about modding a car, but on this car, the rules don't apply - it's very finicky when it comes to exhaust

an aftermarket cat by itself is a completely worthless mod - you may pick up as much as 2hp at 7k, but that's it, at the risk of serious legal issues running without one, depending on the laws in your area

the stock cat on this car is surprisingly not that restrictive, and in fact, in playing with 100, 200 and 300 cell cats, i actually found less performance in street driveability with the lower restriction cats - i ended up with something entirely different, but a lot bigger than i thought i would have - it won't work with the stock header though

additionally, the tubing size coming from the stock header is odd, so it isn't simple plug and play with an aftermarket cat

if you are looking for performance in the exhaust, save up and go to the rs barn header and cat-back system - you'll get a lot more gain from it

hope that helps

going to do that one along with the chip when i get 'er back from the shop this week. getting a thorough checkup, changing all belts, water pump, etc. just bought it and don't want to leave anything to chance, even though she only has 55k on her.

would love to see your mod list some time.....would probably make me jelous and my bank account dizzy.

45K and time for a valve job? My winter beater has 175K and I just changed the wiper blades for the first time. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

lol - if i get to 95%, it's not good enough - remember, this is a toy for me - i want 100% out of it every time i turn the key

it will definitely get one by winter, regardless of mileage
