Need new muffler....any suggestions
#1

All,

Running a RS Barn muffler (it came on the car), noticed that it was cracked along the leading edge closer to the cat-back part of the tube and leaking exhaust out that front edge. Anyway, I want something with a decent / aggressive sound? The cat-back tube is 2 1/2" if that helps. What is everyone running?

Note to Pete, have you seen this on other mufflers? I can take a picture and send it to you if you would like?

Thanks,

I am on my second B&B. The first installed by the PO, had multiple cracks (muffler separated at the seems and the pipe had multiple weld repairs).

I picked up my second B&B because the price was right.

The B&B looks great, sounds great but IMHO is is not up to the task of handling the pulses generated by the engine, hence broken seems around the muffler.

I am thinking of picking up the unit you speak of next.

I believe it has been revised.

Yes, I am going to call him this AM anyway. I am heading to PHL and then up to Newark tomorrow and wanted to stop by for a visit.

there were one or two problems with the early mufflers, but that seems to have been resolved now by the manufacturer - i'm sure pete can figure something out for you

Flash,

Do you know anyone running Borla? Particularly the Stinger? A racing friend can get me a very aggressive price.

BTW, original Invoice was dated 3-26-07. Does that correspond to the early exhaust systems that Pete sold?

not sure if that was early or new - bring the muffler with you - are you driving the car over there?

as for borla or anything else, be very careful about swapping stuff around - catbacks are weird on this car - between pete and i, we have about $20k in testing of a LOT of different systems - regardless of any claims made by manufacturers or anyone else, and while a few showed some small gains here or there, EVERY one of them showed losses that went along with that somewhere EXCEPT the one pete sells and the one i have now (prototype for a new system)

I can probably take it off the car and take it with me as checked baggage. I am flying from DFW up to PHL and driving up to Newark for business meetings on Wed.

well, as expected, an "expert" made another inaccurate post on a different website, using somebody's home made website, and not official information, for reference - just because somebody else posted something, doesn't make it so - very misleading - just as misleading as telling people you don't come here, when you have been a member since 2005, and continue to post copywritten material from this site elsewhere without permission (as if we were never going to do anything about it, though it is great advertising for us) i wasn't going to single anything or anyone out, but it seems unavoidable - either they refuse to grasp the following concept or are unable (perhaps they spent a lot of time on the short yellow bus? - hmmmm - maybe that's why they chose........) no offense jim

i digress - moving on

everything i can find from any official source says that TUV certification does not necessarily mean performance claims are certified - germany does require that any system sold in that country has a TUV certification - they have very strict quality control and acoustic standards - TUV certification insures that they meet those minimum standards - everything i can find from TUV says that they do indeed provide a performance claim verification service, but it is not automatically included in the basic certification - you have to pay extra for that - it is a separate certification - i have seen no such certification - i have seen no data to support the performance claims - neither has anyone else i can find - i am happy to retract this the moment somebody, anybody, proves otherwise

i do find it odd that in the shot on the cargraphic website they show an air filter in their package that won't fit in the 968

at no point am i slagging cargraphic or the system - it seems to be well made, is made of good material, and complies with the minimum emissions, acoustic, materials, and quality standards required - the company has a good reputation, and i have no issue with their products - it would be nice if they backed up any claims they made, though i can't find those either anymore - they have been retracted from any advertising i can find

i could buy any kind of exhaust - i could run any exhaust - we looked hard for ANY charts or any kind of data to support the cargraphic claims - none exists that we can find - the only data anybody could find showed losses in areas i did not want to lose anything - we've certainly spent enough in the process to have bought 10 cargraphic systems if they danged things worked right - everybody knows that i will swap out any component i have the minute something better comes along - i'm on my 11th system now, and it's not like anybody else's, so clearly i'm willing to change stuff out in search of the best performance - i don't care where things come from, or who sells them - i just want the most performance - if it isn't already out there, i'll design it myself - i'm running what i want for my own reasons - i've spent enough time an energy delineating my likes and dislikes of all of the other systems, including the rs barn

pete has been very careful not to make any claims of increased power, and in fact has only said that it doesn't lose power - to date he is the only one to do that - i respect that - other manufacturers make claims, but have never provided any charts to support those claims on a 968 - i've even seen somebody try to pass off 944 charts as 968 charts

something very important to many people about any claims or any system, is how they interact with other modifications - they don't all act the same - this is something to consider when choosing any system - this is something that pete has spent a lot of time and resource working with to insure that other modifications are optimized with his system, and that they don't complicate the end result

i personally don't care what anybody buys or uses - i don't currently have any interest in any systems, i don't make a dime on them, and never have (though i've sure spent enough in the search) - i only point out what we have learned from independent testing and development of other systems as well as ones we have worked out, featuring the good points and bad of all of them, in hopes that others don't get something that is less than what they wanted or expected - we only got into developing stuff because nothing out there worked perfectly - nothing

so, buy what you want - test what you want - run what you want - shop smart - look for data - talk to others who have stuff - compare performance data if that's important to you - compare materials or aesthetics if that's important to you - get the shiny tip or the black tip, the round one, or the oval one - do whatever you want - don't listen to any one individual, and think for yourself

An EXCELLENT statement, Flash - WELL DONE!!!

I hope everyone respects the effort you have made, and continue to make, to improve the 968 series without prejudice to where or who the improvement comes from. There's nothing but good for the rest of us - and, speaking from my little corner of the world, that's appreciated.

My exhaust was custom made-up on my car, there is no cat(track-car), but the exhaust box used is a Borla. If you need any more info please PM me.

Here's what it sounds like at WGI

cool - any chance of a recording behind the car?

quick trackmate question: been thinking about one of those - is there an easy way to hook up the tach send? would have been nice to know what rpm you were doing and what it sounded like at that point

Nice lap. In my daily driver cab, I've never gotten quite to 120mph before the bus stop - you touched 129. You've raised my target! Now I just have to figure out how to get there.

The sound now is picked up by the units built in mic, however you have me thinking now about adding a external mic in the rear. I did move the rear camera to the outside, it's now mounted where the radio antenna was. I will test that out on monday at WGI.

I have recently learned from the previous owner where the tach wire is, so I will hook that up for monday and if I get time shoot over to Stableenergies for a external mic.

Thanks, however my car has coilovers/hoosiers etc so its easier to carry more speed from Turn 1. That was also my 1st time at the glen since the tune etc. Prior to the tune I could stay flat out from turn 1 to the bus stop and my best was 125mph, my target is to break 130 once I get use to carrying more speed into turn 2.

When are you at the glen next? Are you the cab going to the Chin event in Oct?

I've gone to the last 5-6 Chin (TracQuest) Glen events. This October, though, I'm going for a change in venue - I'm participating in the Chin event at NJ MotorSports. I want to see what some other track (other then WGI, which is the only track I've driven) is like.

On my street tires, I haven't had the courage to stay flat out from Turn 1 through the back straight. I try, but I do find my foot lifting a little. Next time, I'll try harder! I'm getting to about 117-118 before braking for the bus stop.

I am also going to the NJMP event, I'm going to be sharing my car with a friend. He has always wanted to drive at a track event, so this will be his 1st ever event thus I'm going to put the PS2's on the car when he drives.

I was just at the Thunderbolt track, it's a blast and I hear from some friends that they like the lightning track even better. It should be a fun event getting to drive both tracks.

See you there

Update:

Took the muffler off my car and packed in my rolling duffle bag (we call it Big Orange) and took it with me on a business trip to PHL. I expect that the TSA folks got a good laugh when the screened my bag....

Anyway, made my way to RSB and meet Pete (finally) and he could not have been more gracious! He replaced the muffler...no questions asked.

So....I will check the new muffler in as checked baggage on the return trip.

Thanks Pete, you made my day!!!! OH...and the CFO (my wife) loved your exchange policy, although that did not give me any "open to buy" any sooner for the rear shocks. Hey...a guy has to try every now and again....

Gary, I'm looking forward to meeting you. My son is planning to attend with his Maserati Spyder - but he just found that he has a cracked wheel so the hunt is on for a replacement. If that doesn't happen, I don't know if he'll attend with his not-delivered-yet QuattoPorte or drop out.

Where in North Jersey are you? I'm in Mahwah.

Rob, now you know why we use, trust, rely on, whatever else is appropriate, Pete and RS Barn (and, not to be forgotten, Max!).
