RS Barn VS OEM Flywheel

Hi,





Since I am going to replace all the parts operating the clutch, I was thinking of replacing the DMF as well.I am not sure it is broken, I just want to be on the safe side. I had a look on the RS Barn web-site and the weight saving compared to OEM Flywheel is hugh.



But, how will the RS Barn flywheel perform on a stock/street car? any experiences?? will it affect the overall smoothness of the car/ ride etc?

It all depends on how you drive the car. It appears that the lightweight flywheels are not recommended for cars which are regularly driven in heavy traffic. There are a few poeple on this site who have aluminum flywheels, and I'm soon they'll chime in soon.



One exciting new development is that Flash is nearing completion of a spring-centered clutch disk, which will significantly reduce the transmission noise associated with conversion to a single-mass, lightweight flywheel. I don't know if his disk will work with the RS Barn flywheel, or just with the Fidanza, though. If it would work with the RS Barn, which is a few pounds heavier than the Fidanza (though it costs a few hundred dollars more), this seems like it would be an attractive solution for many people.



It is excruciatingly expensive to take any substantial amount of weight off this (or any) car, and imho, the availability of a flywheel that will signicantly reduce the rotating mass is an attractive opportunity, if you are willing to give up a bit of driveability, or if your car is primarily used in light traffic. Good luck with the decision either way.

I have the RS barn flywheel and I haven't had an issue with driving in traffic. The car is a bit more stuttery when you're trying to decelerate gently, and of course there is the drive train chatter that goes along with it. I found that with this flywheel the car has more urgency to get going compared to the stock DMF. Not much, but you'll feel it.



Overall I think it's worth getting while-you're-in-there type of thing... if you don't mind a bit of noise <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

it will work with the rs barn flywheel - in fact, it was developed specifically for that flywheel, not the fidanza - i am pretty sure that it will work with the fidanza though

A "belt and suspender" question -- well two questions...



If it's time to sell the car and silence is a must, could we use the spring loaded disk with a DMF?



Leading to ask... why not use the spring loaded disk with a DMF. Save wear and tear on the expensive DMF. A Porsche clutch that will last a million miles?

The standard original setup is a spring clutch and a DMF..

the 968 OEM setup is NOT a spring clutch - it is a solid center clutch disk, with no springs



the new spring center clutch disk will NOT work with the DMF



however, there will soon be an improved OEM style disk available too, but it will not have springs

You never cease to amaze me, I want to know where you are getting all the energy for this? Keep up the good work! I look forward to the improvements in the clutch/flywheel since I am due to have mine replaced.

I'll have to see where my budget sits once my clutch finally gives it up, its slipping now. I don't think I'll be able to swing the LWFW with a new clutch though <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

How many miles are on your car? If the clutch is slipping, there's a fair chance the surface of your flywheel is compromised. This means you'll have to take it out to resurface it, at which time they can check to see if the rubber isolation piece is in good shape. I understand it's difficult, if not impossible in many cases, to rebuild a DMF, so it may be more economical in the long run to go ahead and replace it with a single-mass flywheel.

Currently, I have a Spec FW with a Sachs clutch kit, and, obviously, I have the noise and rattle problem in the transmission, especially in 1st, 2nd and 3rd gear.

I don't know if the Spec FW is the same as the Fidanza one, but they look like the same.

Anyway I hope that your clutch disk will work too... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

looked at it again - there might be a couple of problems - have to take some measurements to know for sure - tough to see from the shots



the outside diameter of the pilot bearing flange may be too large and interfere with the back of the disk



the "dish" of the front face is the big question - how far down the bolt surface is relative to the friction surface will determine whether or not the bolt heads hit anything

It should be something like 0.2 inch (5-6 mm)... if I remember... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mellow.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

i have a powerhaus billet flywheel in my car. Its lighter then all the other flywheels avail @ 12.5LBS
