Replica Porsche Motorsport flywheel
#1

It has taken a while but we have finally found the time and effort to remanufacture our own version of the Porsche Motorsport steel one-piece flywheel that has been out of production for the last 3 years.

We fitted the prototype into our supercharged 968 this afternoon, hopefully the car will be back in one piece for our trackday next Saturday where we will be testing it alongside the new 9m/KW suspension package.

I have taken photographs of the finished flywheel and will be able to post them next week. The new flywheel is not a superlight race only unit, in comparison to the stock dual mass at 31.5lbs the 9m solid weighs in at 21lbs so we think it should also be suitable for road use without suffering stalling issues.

The flywheel is machined from a 3.5" thick solid billet of alloy steel, there being more material left in the waste bin than there is on the finished item, thus there is a lot of time spent on the CNC machining centre for each one. The ring gear and trigger ring are seperately machined and shrink fitted/welded onto the flywheel after machining. We will probably have the batch of finished flywheels dynamically balanced after the rings are fitted.

The price of the finished units will be between £850 & 900 each, +VAT and carriage as appropriate.

colin - that sounds great - that should make a lot of people very happy

a couple of questions:

is the 2300 rpm rattle there like it is with the lighter flywheels?

does your flywheel accept a spring center clutch? this was a contemplated solution to some of the rattle issues

as a replica of a factory part, will it pass inspection for racing?

please post pics here - then they will be able to live on this server with the rest of the volumes of info - we are all very anxious

Don't know about the rattle as we still have the rear axle out of the car after indexing the torsion bars to suit the new KW suspension. We will be running the car on track this Saturday so will have the running/driving feedback next week.

The flywheel is a direct bolt-in replacement for the factory dual mass and uses the standard factory spigot bearing, clutch assembly and guide tube.

I did a sketch/drawing of the last solid motorsport flywheel that Porsche ever sold just before we fitted it into a race car, so as far as I am concerned this is as near to an exact replica as we could get save for some detail differences in how we have fixed on the ring gear and trigger wheel. We could have revised the design to reduce the inertia but we decided to keep to the original specification, hence I am sure that this flywheel would be accepted as a faithful replica of the original homologation part for racing purposes.

I have taken a few pictures, I just need to remember to bring my camera home to upload them for you all - d'oh.

The standard dual mass weighs in at 31.5lbs whereas the 9m Motorsport comes in at a positively svelte 21lb.

But what did the Porsche Motorsport flywheel that you used as a prototype weigh?

We did not have the opportunity to weigh it at the time, but making the assumptions that Porsche use steel with the same density as the rest of the world and that our version is much about an exact copy, the answer is 21lb, give or take 0.5lb between friends.

Finally remembered to bring home the camera.......

Please note that the large welds on the trigger ring are only on the prototype, all production items will have neat little TIG welds rather than the heavy handed MIG runs that were done at midnight on Monday.
