RS Barn cat back vs BB sound?
#1

Has anybody had the chance to listen to both the BB and the RS Barn cat back systems? I've heard the BB, and it sounds wonderful. Do the two sound similar? Given the choice between the two, I'd prefer the RS Barn because of its upgrade path including the header and high flow cat, but am wondering about the sound quality comparison between the two cat back systems. Thanks

i finally have - now this is very subjective, and not intended to piss off b&b owners

on the sound end, i like the rsbarn sound better - to me, it's less ricey sounding - the b&b sounds "ok" with a resonator, and is certainly an improvement over stock, but i think it is too "cracky" up top without the resonator - also, at road speed, the b&b has much more of a "drone" than the rsbarn

on the performance end, there does not seem to be any difference - both systems provide an improved throttle response, and both systems provide similar weight reductions - i would need to dyno test them to see any difference, but i suspect they would be very minimal, and if anything, the b&b would have less torque, due to the muffler design

i think the reverse flow muffler on the rsbarn does a very nice job, and the resonator tip finishes it off well

and then there's that upgrade feature..............

sound is indeed subjective - I for one, feel just the opposite - BB sounds much throatier / deeper tone, far less rattier than the RS Barn, but it does have a gurgle which is ( barely ) more detectible than the RS Barn which seems to be smoother. the best analogy I can make relative to the notes is this : ( THOUGH I WISH EITHER ONE WOULD SOUND LIKE THAT.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

BB = Aston Martin DB9

RS Barn = Carrera GT

and the jury's still out relative to performance, torque, etc.. at this point it's only speculation - there have been no independent tests to validate BB's performance results claim, and not sure anyone did a before and after on RS's system..

have you heard something other than the cars in paso robles? if you are going by what you heard in paso robles, you've not actually heard the cat-back yet - it sounds totally different than the system with a header - both ron and i have the header system - the cat-back only is MUCH lower in note

as for performance, true, i have only the seat of the pants comparisons to go by so far, plus knowing what a straight through versus a reverse flow will do to torque

I agree with Flash. My stock cat back sounds great. Not ratty anywhere. When you add the Header the tone changes quite a bit and under load it has a snap. I've been working with Flash to tone this down. If I could have the cat back sound with the Header I would be thrilled.

Several changes are being tested. Should have results soon

Pete, Bob,

ah, that would explain it - heard the RSB system with header ( somehow I thought you guys had not yet put in the headers before the Paso Robles meet - )

no worries - just wanted to be talking apples and apples - there was a lot going on that day and i figured there might have been such confusion

Thanks for all the inputs. "Sounds" (OK, pun kinda intended) like a lot of good work continues to be done in the area of 968 exhausts.

It would be awesome if you guys could get an audio recording of this stuff. Something like, stock vs cat-back vs header + cat-back. Maybe even throw in an airbox mod.

It definitely sounds different with the header, we took the cat back off Pete's silver car which has the header and put it straight on to one of my cars and got back the deep throaty sound. No annoying drone with the RSBarn cat back - I drove 4 hours with no radio and just the car to listen to.

i actually did some recording of all the cars at the paso robles run - i need to add a couple of clips, but it might work out - what i really want to do is an additional set with drive by recordings - these cars sound totally different sitting still versus under load

Not to add even more variables, but since I assume most people who went with the header also added the high flow cat, I wonder how much the cat contributes to the different sound of the full system vs the cat back only...

lol - it would sure save on shipping stuff back and forth for testing

he's actually going to duplicate what i have on my car right now (we've been trying out different components), so he can hear what i am talking about in the sound i have right now - then we can finish the tweeking

this really is fun though - i love working on stuff with him - i think i need to make more trips back there

I've not listened to the RSBARN muffler system (968 Forums Advertisor) but I bought the B&B w/resonator and love it. A bit more expensive but a beautiful piece of work. And perhaps more resale value if I ever sell my car and put the original back on. On cruise at speed the B&B's quiet. Goose it and you hear the throaty sound. My 968 didn't really sound like a sports car until I made this change.

Either way is way better than stock.

Got my RS Barn Cat-Back on the F-stock 968 Friday. I REALLY like it. Good sound under full throttle (now I can hear the car) and an amazingly docile sound at cruise on the highway.

Nice balance of comfort and bark Pete!
