Royal Purple Oil
#1

I've had some recent discussions with my Son about Royal Purple Oil. He thinks it's much better than Mobil One. He says he can tell a difference in the sound of his engine after changing to it. RoyalPurple

I guess my first question to you son would be, did he change viscosity grade or stay the same? That can have the most dramatic effect on how an engine sounds and feels. Even with the same grade, a fresh fill of the same grade will have different properties than an old, worn out fill.

I'm sure Royal Purple is an excellent oil, but listening to the sound of an engine is not scientific analysis on how it performs.

A quick read on their web site shows some deception on test results. One test they document shows they replace a 20W-50 with a 10W-30 and show a horsepower improvement. The reduction in viscosity is directly responsible for this improvement, regardless of the brand.

I've used 20W-50 Royal Purple for a couple of years now, I like it, i cant say that it improves on power but one thing i am sure of is that i get less oil consumption the engine is quieter, and engine temp doesn't get as high, my previous oil was Mobil 1 of the same viscosity, one thing i dont like about it is that it looks dirty about five minutes after changing the oil because of it color, I just found i guy that sell's Amsoil just around the corner so i think i will give that a try at the next oil change,

I may give it a try. I'm always concerned over engine temp in the Summer here in the South. How often do you change your oil since starting Royal Purple. I would hate the dirty look because Mobil 1 looks like honey after 5000 miles in my car. On the other hand the BMW [Castrol] oil in my X5 looks dirty after 10 miles.

larry - a bit off topic, but have you tried the low temp fan switch yet? it has really made a difference in our cars - never gets above 9 o'clock anymore

One source online is here: VW fan switch

Or I imagine you can go to any parts counter and order one.

IMO, this switch is worth its weight in gold !! In addition to the benefit it offers the engine, the peace of mind alone ( by not having to constantly peek at that damn needle rising to the 10 o'clock and beyond mark any longer ) is priceless.

Like flash said, haven't seen it past the "9" line any more... regardless of conditions; bumper to bumper, etc.

woohoo!!! what was the temp setting? it's marked on the side

now you are going to need a 24mm socket - the thing is a real pain to get in there and change - bad angle

you're gonna love it though

I don't know how we went from engine oil to a temp switch but i do have the lower temp switch, the difference in temp that i noticed with the Royal Purple was from doing DE events at TWS (Texas World Speedway) in the summer last year, temp was around 110-115 there is no temp switch that keep the coolant temp under the 9 mark in these conditions, but the cooler switch works great around town,

this sounds like one for dave to look into - he's the oil guy - i'm all for lower temps for sure

i only had a brief experience with those temps last year, but it was right around the 9 mark under normal driving conditions - i have improved the airflow over the radiator by 8% though, and i have a modified thermostat, so that may be playing in there

flash,

My car is just fine in the heat of houston under normal driving conditions without a special thermostat or improved air flow over the radiator, he never see's over 9 and it gets pretty damn hot here in Houston, I am talking about giving the car hard time on the track, its a big difference as i,m sure you already now

yeah - for sure - i haven't had it out on the track yet to see how it does - that will happen pretty soon though - canyon driving and playing has been fine though - water temp around 190 and oil temp peaking as high as 215 or so

looking forward to seeing how it does

I guess with the new fan switch and Royal Purple I'll have a problem with the engine getting warm enough for the heater to work. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />
