REQ for DIY: Hatchback/Wing repair
#1

I need to overhaul my hatchback trim and wing: at least four of the mounts securing the trim need to be reglued and I'm down to two of six wing-attachment bolts.

I'm pretty nervous about undertaking this 'cold'.

Hoping someone could provide DIY tips, of course preferably in a form I could post to the DIY library.

Any takers?

Thanks, Flash.

I have started doing some work myself and think that in my case I won't need a DIY. I"m taking pictures as I go in the hopes that I can put a useful DIY document together when I'm done. Here's what I've done and what I've got so far: would really appreciate anyone pointing out errors , or adding suggestions- either as regards the work I'm doing or the way I'm documenting it.

In my case the only mounts which were damaged were a total of four; those surrounding the area where the hatch struts meet the frame- clearly an area of stress. In order to work on these, I wedged a sturdy piece of plastic about 1/2" wide and 1/16" deep between the two damaged mounts on a given side, lifting the black trim up and away from the hatch glass. (FWIW I used the handle of a computer keycap puller, visible at right in the photo)

The picture above shows a damaged mount, where the rubber on the part shown at the lower arrow has separated from where it should attach to the small panel at the upper arrow. I have prepped the area for regluing by scraping the rubber and metal with a #11 Xacto knife. I then cleaned the area thoroughly with a swab and lacquer thinner and allowed it to dry.

I then spread E6000 adhesive (seems to be the only stuff that will work, according to posts at 968.net) on both sides, pushing it on both sides of the rubber in places where rubber had not separated cleanly from the metal (See top arrow on the photo above this). I let it cure as instructed and then clamped the pieces together as shown. After about half an hour of drying I moved the clamps away from the damaged mounts so as to be able to hit the glued areas with a heat gun from time to time: E6000 likes heat as it sets up.

--------------------------------

Once this is done I need to re-secure the wing to the frame. Right now it's only held by one screw per side of the car. The PET seems to show two screws per side- I see where there appear to have been a total of three. One screw set needed to be special ordered because it's 22mm long, not a standard dimension.

Red arrows show where two machine screws are missing, and the single remaining screw on this side of the wing.

I plan to remove the trim along the lower back of the hatch and enough of the split-head nuts to allow me to flex the black side trim away from the hatch so as to be able to insert new screws, washers and nuts in the wing attachment area. Does this sound like the right thing to be doing?

Any help appreciated.

John, *sigh* BTDT twice already. Recently I noticed my E6000 failing on both sides - so far only on the two forward bolts. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/mad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

My only comment about your procedure would be to say that when I repaired mine, I removed both pieces of trim from the car so I could really clean them up and glue and clamp on the workbench.

Is there anywhere that these fasteners, trim, and screws can be ordered?
