I had a mad moment and took my arm rest to bits the screws kept falling out it was driving me nuts....

 



 

Repaired the screw holes with Plastix Repair Kit

 

 

got a nice off cut of grey Leather from the trimmers £3 or $5 which ever you prefer

 



 

enough to do about 3 Arm Rests

 

 

not looking too shabby for $5 and a bit of glue,

I have not had to replace my top covers ( on either 968 ) yet . Somehow they managed to stay in great shape, but I had to replace the hinge frames twice, or there times ..IIRC - that connecting strip of cheap, feeble plastic which Porsche uses does not seem to last too long ..

You can also sandwich in a strip of nylon webbing as a hinge.

Has anyone made a stronger bracket to replace Porsche's design as the plastic piece with the hinge like mechanism breaks all the time and it costs I think $45.00 to replace this piece of junk? (see top picture on the right, that is the bracket I am talking about)

 

I replaced mine with a brass cabinet hinge that I found on line but kept the rest of the bracket.

Everyone talks about how Porsche "over engineered" their cars during the 80's and 90's has not seen the highly engineered console hinge. How Porsche thought that was a good idea, I will never know.

I'm in need of an arm rest cover.  I have the plastic components, hinge/tray etc but not the cover.  I guess it broke some time in the distant past and put the cover in a safe place .... now I cannot find it  :whine:

 

Anyway, I have the XC9 option .... rootwood gear nob .... and was thinking about getting the local carpenter to make a wooden cover and stain it appropriately; if I had a router I'd do it myself.

 

Anybody else done this successfully?  I don't see that the wood would cause any undue strain on the hinges.  Thoughts?

I didn't do anything as fancy as wood, but I got the one pictured below off eBay. its a little taller so more room inside and nice height for my elbow.

I got mine a while back and it now comes in other colors but also seem to have doubled in price since then so that's a factor. As for you wood idea

I think if you could get it to match it would look pretty cool. My only concern would be the weight of it - the standard lid and mine are light so any additional

weight could add some strain on the plastic hing...

Actually that's not bad at all, thanks.  Do you still have the name of the company that supplied yours?  We must be talking the complete top cover that screws into the hinge and just the leather skin that fits atop an old/shabby top cover ..... yes?

Yes it replaces the the old lid and screws directly on to the tray/hing. I've had mine for over 10 years now and have had no problems with it and i provides a little more space for storage...
