Anyone ever use German Auto Tops? https://www.germanautotops.com/porsche/p...tible-tops

I suspect that many of these tops come from the same manufacturer.  When I talked to someone at length at GAT he recommended the Twilfast II over the German A5 material which costs me $100 less??  Seemed to suggest it was the factory top on many newer luxury convertibles??  I do not know either way.

 

Any suggestions on the German A5 Canvas material vs the Twilfast II ??

That's a good price. However keep in mind you need the inner cover  (the head liner) as well...or if your old one is good shape you use that....and you are good to go. Not sure if I would be comfortable installing it myself. Wonder what the labor cost is.

i hear about this stuff all the time, and it makes me crazy.  shops tell you it will work, charge you for nearly as much as a new top, and then blame failure on everything else, including "the car sitting outside", so that they don't have to fix it for free, and end up selling you a new top anyway.  

 

glue will not work.  make him give you a guarantee in writing, with free warranty repair when it fails.  i'm betting he won't.  this is NOT an mg top.  those tops go down easily and do not fold in the middle like this one does.  the glue will not be elastic enough.

 

a complete top replacement should be about $1500.  if you can't find a place, i can send you to a couple of them in socal.  for $2k you can get a complete new top, including a zip out rear window (excellent upgrade).

 

GAHH is the better top, and is the OEM replacement now.  you can get the mercedes canvas, which is a bit nicer, or the german weave, which is original.  robbins is ok.  stay away from stayfast.  you have a choice on finish.  

In hindsight, I probably should have come down for a visit and used your guy. The (very good, acknowledged as the best, locally) guy who did mine told me in order to make a zip out window, he'd have to order a second (sacrificial) rear piece ($180, IIRC) so that he'd have enough material to sew the zipper onto, and it would take an additional 3-4 hours labor. As it was, he charged me $1800 and I think he lost his shirt on it. He worked on it for the better part of 3 days and it was perfect when he finished, unlike a few I've seek for sale with wrinkles and creases in the new top.

If it makes anyone feel better, my friend's 2016 BMW 7 series convertible top was slashed by an a-hole who broke in to steal some stuff ( no idea why they would not just bust a rear window, but I suppose criminals don't think rationally.. ). The OE top for that BMW , and just the fabric alone, with none of the hardware or the labor charges included, was just short of $ 8,000 ! Yes, for a rag !

So when you're looking at the replacement prices for,your tops, keep that in perspective .. :-)


p.s. so if you ask your insurance company why they raised your premium, expect an answer along the lines of the above mentioned costs to repair and replace parts ..

back when i had my MGB, i had a sign i would set on the dash that said "come on in.  it's open.  take what you have to, but please don't hurt my top"

 

i have always been a firm believer in not locking the doors on a convertible, if i am going to be away for more than a very short period.  whatever is in the car is less expensive than a new top.

Good advice, i guess i need to make a sign for my cab.  And keep nothing of value inside, at least nothing more valuable than the cost the top....

lol - i know it sounds ridiculous at the onset.  but, having had to replace a cut top, due to somebody breaking into the car, and knowing how hard it is to get a top properly installed, with no leaks, it seemed logical.

And don't park in San Francisco !    An average of 80 cars per day are  broken into .  Busted windows, slashed soft tops, or crow bar opened trunks  ( if the other two methods don't do the trick...) .

Weve taken our Boxster on vacation trips which include overnight stays at hotels/motels. Makes me nervous every time. Havent done that with the 968 yet.
