Cabrio rear deck rubber seal available?
#1

Hi,

as I've been looking over the 94 cab I just bought for things that will/may need replacing I notice an inch-wide gap in the rubber that forms the seal for the trunk lid, right above the keyhole. Was not able to locate a replacement for this from Paragon, or Pelican, or one other place I checked, although everyone seems to have door seals. Anyone else found a source for this seal that seems to have shrunk (shrank?)

Thanks,

--Michael

Have you tried searching by part number, 94150435110? There seem to be plenty of new ones out there, although I didn't place any calls to check availability. There are also used ones from AutoAtlanta and even on eBay.

I replaced those seals front and back a while ago. Got them from Sunset.

Don't recall the price, but not expensive.

tamathumper - how'd you find that part number? Also, in reading threads from over the years I noticed a lot of messages saying ordering from AutoAtlanta was at your own peril, and that you would likely regret it. Apparently thats not been your experience?

Niner - I left a message for Sunset.

thanks!

Just checked that AutoAtlanta link, thanks again, as well as a google hit for the part number, returned a Jim Ellis page... about $275 for that strip of rubber!

Maybe its just me, but I don't consider that 'not expensive' ;0)

I looked up the part number in the PET (parts catalog), and did a Google search for it. I've ordered parts from AutoAtlanta for a couple decades, with mixed results. They're not my first choice. Try calling Sunset with that part number.

I have used AutoAtlanta quite a bit and have not had any problems with them. While not as cheap as Sunset, they do have the parts catalog online. Another good online source for the parts catalog is DC Auto.

I need to replace a torn trunk seal on my cab, and I am curious if anyone has used the trunk seal part that Only944.com features on their website?

https://www.only944.com/partscatalog/only/trunkseal/

Apparently it is not the exact part or profile of the original Porsche seal, but it is very similar and they say it works fine.

The point of using their seal is $90 (for their seal) vs about $250 for the Porsche part, and according to Sunset, Suncoast, Porsche Atlanta, etc., the Porsche part is 3-4 weeks away in Germany.

I don't know about the seal, but the item I purchased from Only944 was well made. If that helps.

Well I am going to try the aftermarket seal (that I referenced above) and see how it performs. I’ll try to provide a report back here.

There must have been several people who read this and ordered the seal.  I ordered one last night and got an email that they just ran out of trunk seals a few days ago.  They are getting more.

I ordered the seal, received it today, and installed it this afternoon.

It indeed is a slightly different profile than the OEM seal but it seems to work just fine, and in fact it makes a slightly tighter fit when the trunk is shut as one might expect with a new uncompressed seal. The difference in this aftermarket seal is mainly an extra bulge/flap on one side which serves no purpose for our 968 application.

The overall size and the way it fits onto the trunk surround metal seem to be the same as our OEM seal, or it is so close that any differences are not detectable. I have not water tested it yet though I am not expecting any problem with that.

I would recommend this seal as a useful alternative to the very expensive OEM part.

Is the new seal shaped to fit the trunk area, or is it a straight piece of rubber that you just bend around the corners? If it's not shaped, does the profile change when it goes around the bends?

I ask this because I had a similar experience with "universal" door seals on my 51 Chevy truck. Where it went around the corners, it stuck out so much further than it did on the straight parts that it didn't seal properly.

If you have a chance, show us the finished product.

Thanks,

Matt

Matt, there was no problem bending the seal around the corners of the trunk. I didnt notice that the seal deformed or stuck out in any way due to the curvature. The replacement seal was not formed but was a straight piece, and I am pretty certain that the OEM seal was also a straight unformed piece to begin with. The new seal just presses onto the metal, gripping it fairly tightly, and the bulb portion just follows the curves well. There is no buckling or bulging going on.

I wont be able to take any more photos for awhile, but I can tell you that the new seal looks the same on the car as the old one did with the little pointed tip on the top of the seal pointing straight up even where the seal goes around curves.

Great info and pics thanks!

This seal was low on my list due to cost/benefit.

My old seal has a gap at the trunk lock, presumably due to shrinking, (but water dies not seem to leak in)

Does your new seal nest into itself to complete the bead?

The new seal has a tubular piece (think male) sticking out of one end that slips inside the other end of the seal (think female) where the two ends meet at the trunk latch. My original seal seemed to be bonded or glued together where the two ends met, and I’m thinking of finding some glue to do the same with this new seal. As it is, the two ends meet perfectly with maybe a 1/16” gap.

Thanks for the recommendation.  Seems like a good idea to glue the ends together to delay the day when the new seal will recede and show a gap.
