I have my car up on the lift doing a little front suspension work and noticed oil drips on the lower balance cover bolts. I start looking for the replacement gasket and find there is not a gasket. The cover is stuck on with sealent.



I start looking closer and the oil could be coming from the pan gasket or from the front of the engine and running down and back at speed. Who knows???? I know you can't get the cover off the front of the motor without removing all belts and pullys/rollers etc. Any great ideas on how to narrow it down? I don't want to drop the crossmember and do the pan if not needed. I don't want to remove all the belts and rollers if not needed. I wish I could figure this out! The leaks are bad enough to soil the pans between oil changes and I get drops on the floor as well.

The balance shaft seal is a common place to have a leak. I also found a drip coming from the (OPRV) oil pressure relief valve, it's the big bolt on the side of the block by the steering pump. I pulled it out and replaced the crush washer there.

You need to clean everything up really well, then watch it run and determine where the leak is coming from. I had a heck of a leak on my old coupe from the pan gasket, but it looked like the balance shaft was leaking until I cleaned it up.

Had a leak on the Land cruiser that when discovered was very hard to narrow down as it made quite a mess. I did just as mentioned above by Steve. Sprayed it down with a good degreaser / carb cleaner, rinsed and wiped it down. After starting her up again the mystery solved.

Must be the O-ring from the balanceshaft housing. The 0-ring is not flexibel anymore after those years. I got the same problem. Leak not traceable but after replacing the gasket from the oilthermostathousing it was the easier repair of the balanceshaft housing.



I would suggest you to repair that first.

Are you talking about the "O" ring behind the drive gear housing for the balance shaft? Looks like there are other seals behind the drivegear. Did you replace them as well or just the O ?

Balance Shaft Seals have become notorious for leaking. Since I'm due for belts this Spring, it's a "while you're in there" project for RS Barn.

Front crank seal, oil pan gasket and right balance shaft o ring/cover are fairly common. Also oil thermostat housing. None are easy to replace and if you need engine mounts and have broken heat sheilds (rattles) and have two or more suspected leaks, pull the engine and do it all.

The oil pan job is big as you have to drop the crossmember, it took me about a week working on it at a few hours a night...I did the motor mounts and a few other odds and ends while I was in there. If it's a daily driver you'll need to budget a who weekend for the job. You'll also need and engine hoist or some other method to support the engine from the top.

Replaced the O ring and also the rubber ring from the house witch gave me the problems about the huge leak. its a gasket from 2 dollar...... The job is an easy one within 3 hours you could have done it. But it is necessay that could can acces the car from the bottom.

I cleaned everything up and it looks like the culprit is possibly the lower balance seals. I started taking the front of the engine apart only to fin I can't get the jamnuts loose from the turnbuckels. Last service guy must have really cranked em on. I took the small one off the car and put it in a vice and still can't break it loose. More parts to order....
